Default rear brakes

Rebuilding rear brakes on my 48 coupe, I am having a problem attaching the ball end of the hand brake cable assembly into the hand brake lever on the back shoe, is there a trick I can use without busting my hands to pieces, it was easy coming apart (always the case) Help !

What size is the cable in relation to the old one? AND, what size is the slot in the lever?
My vague rememberance is that the cable should just slip in...
With the spring stop clip out of the way, -put it in last
Who made the parking brake cable?

First make sure the hand brake is fully released. then try installing cable. If it's still difficult, go under the car and loosen the nuts that control the tension on the clevis pin so that the cable is slack. Then reinstall cable at rear wheel. Then go back and install the clevis pin and adjust the E-Brake cable tension. This info. is for a 40 Ford but I think your's is similar. Also, make sure the E-Brake arm that the cable slides into can be moved and is not "locked up" for some reason. Notice in the photo below I used a ball peen hammer to move and hold the E-Arm forward. Try that first. before any of the other previous suggestions.

48 does not use clevis pin and has a ball end that is suppose to fit in the e-brake lever via a slot
