Default Roadster top rest reinforcement

I have a question about whether the top rests for a 28/29 roadster should have a reinforcement plates used under the quarterpanels where they fasten. I see that some model A catalogs show reinforcing plates in their catalogs for 30/31 roadsters. I suspect that 28/29 roadsters just use a large flat washer under the nuts used to secure the top rests to the quarterpanels. If anyone knows what is used for the top rests under the quarterpanels, I would appreciate your response.

Dudley,
Do the plates look original or homemade? It is strange that Bratton's catalog only shows the reinforcing plates for 30/31's and they are kind of expensive at $32 a pair for 2 pieces of steel. Bert's catalog shows no reinforcing plates I can find.

I'm not sure on the Roadster but some models have the reinforcement in place to also hold the side panels in place so they don't move all the way to the inner 1/4 panel. Others may have more or different information.

Why would 't the 30-31 fit?..isn't the bolt spacing the same?

My 29 has the plate and certainly distributes weight better than washers. Wayne

I've seen those rests mounted on the "B" posts, to aid in getting in the car. NOT sure of what they used inside the posts???

Rusty, the 1928-29's definitely used a thin gauge angle iron piece. The top rest brackets were bolted thru it and the other side of the angle was bolted together with the panel above decklid, trunk hinges (if used) and the drainage channel. Here's a picture I saved.

Randy,
Thanks for posting the excellent picture. I don't know how you took the picture, but is sure helps me understand how the bracket is installed. I didn't know the reinforcing bracket was bolted to the panel above the lid and the quarterpanel. Is the picture of a 28/29 roadster or a 30/31? Maybe they are the same.

Rusty, the picture was taken on a '28 body. Any I've seen have had this bracket spot welded onto the quarter panel - curious that your's is missing - any indication at all that there was ever anything there? I couldn't find the bracket on either Bratton's or Snyder's webpages, but did find them on Mac's and Brookville. Mac's says they are US made and for 1928-31 whereas Brookville online catalogue states 1930-31. More than likely Mac's is selling the Brookville ones I would guess. Also guessing that Brookville has them incorrectly identified - likely a whole lot easier and more likely to get an answer from Brookville than from Mac's!! Here's a couple of screen captures from Mac's webpage and Brookville's online catalogue - the exploded body view of the 30-31 is on page 48 and the bracket is listed on about page 43 I think. Good luck and let us know what you find out, I'm curious to know the outcome.
