Default Spellings/Misspeling?

Couldn't refrain from commenting on some of the "misspellings" on Ford Barn. Many are comical and I often wonder if they are deliberate.

I suspect that most are accidental. I feel that the "accidents" should be overlooked since these folks have so much to contribute. Gar Williams

What I do to try to reduce the number of grammatical and spelling errors before posting a message is to copy the message into Word and do a spell check on it and then paste it back into the message. It is very easy and only takes a minute or so to do. It seems like there is a pretty good spell checker on Fordbarn that catches a lot of errors if you correct the highlighted words it produces. Correctly spelled words and correct grammar are easier to read and follow. Just my two cents.

Well....I'm just an ignorant grease monkey and can't spell worth ten cents anyway. As long as a person can get their message across in a legible fashion what do a few spelling errors matter?

You can always tell a typo from an spelling error. I think as long as the point gets across, who wants to nit pick.

I really don't care what your spelling is like. This forum is about Model A's and it doesn't matter what educational levels you were blessed to receive.
This has been hashed over before and ended in grief when all the "holier than thou's" piled on.
I recall one guy saying he just "closes the post" if he see's spelling errors. I mean really...get a grip man!

Threads like this should be nipped in the bud before good honest inteligent Model A'ers with admirable mechanical skills and a wealth of experiance to share.... get their feelings hurt and drop out
Oh...and for the record I never use spell check so I hope you'all find at least one error in this message

Not to nit-pick, but what bothers me, are those posts where the punctuation is totally lacking to the point of not being understandable. Sometimes I wonder how others understand them.

I don't have a problem with it, but I wonder, why do so many people spell it "bumBer" not "bumPer"? I saw three different signs at Hershey that spelled it the same way.

I see it here, other car message boards and ebay...is it a regional thing?

Since you asked, you must be some type of expert. Why do I type p's for b's and q's for d's, sometimes I type an n for an h and a b for a d. I'll do it when writing longhand or typing. What's up Doc?

The typo errors are easy to explain, but sometimes I have to re-read some posts several times to figure out what they are trying to say.Its easy to just read it before you post it and most of the unintelligible stuff can be fixed. I don't really care that much if you can't spell as long as I can figure out what you want to say.I have noticed though that the worst offenders holler the loudest.
And please excuse my southern accent if it shows up in this post.

I LOVE the new 'Barn format with it's options to edit & delete my postings as needed.

as for intentional misspelling, sometimes I refer to this machine I'm typing on as a "compuker".

We certainly can't expect perfect spelling and grammar, but what about each of us taking the time to proofread our posts before hitting send? It's simple and catches the majority of mistakes.

I have some friends that are older, younger, higher educated and lower educated than me that are afraid of the computer. They will not touch a computer. I think that most people on Ford Barn are about my age and I can live with spelling and grammar mistakes. I am just glad they are on the site.

Remember in high school when you had to diagram a sentence?

I did not know about the right click.

Based on the sheer number of posts indicated in threads of the first page, this spelling and grammar discussion (with over 50 posts), is far more popular than any discussion regarding Model A Fords.

When I checked, there were 53 posts with now over 1100 views.

I can only attrubute the increase in views to members that saw I had posted, and wanted to view the importance of what I had to say?

OK now, did you just misspell "ATTRUBUTE" to fit into this thread, or was it purely a mistake? LOL

BTW, I noticed that a couple of the responders were comming down on loumo as being too judgemental, but if you read his opening statement he only asked if some misspellings might be on purpose, as they can be comical.

For instance, if you are talking about "SHIFTING GEARS", but forget the "F", that could imply a painful experience!!!!!

Consider them wrong. Having dislexia in no way makes me stupid. Graduated tech school in the Honor Student category. Also maintained a 98 average in Physics and many other math, science and shop related courses in Highschool. Just because spelling and proper puctuation are not my strong suites you would be well advized to not let that judge me. Rod

I think why many people take offense with bad spelling, grammar, and punctuation is in the fact that they remember how many thousands of dollars they have spent in taxes for schooling. Dyslexia is no longer an excuse either as these posts are done by computer and spell check is free and a courtesy to others.

I guess I'll chime in, since I'm a writer in my "day job"

There are several ways to look at this: either someone isn't edu-ma-cated enough to know how to spell/punctuate/match verb tenses, or they don't care, or their brain is going faster than their hands are typing. The latter is the case for me, quite often. I know several "grease monkeys" who can't write worth a tinker's d@mn, but who know more about cars than I ever will.

I think that, especially if you're asking a question, it doesn't hurt to make an extra effort to communicate clearly. When communicating on a forum, there's no body language, facial expression, or other cues to help readers understand what we're trying to say. You can't see my hands when I hold them just so to indicate the awkward angle of my radiator. So it just makes sense to try and be as clear as you can. True for answering questions as well; if you're going to bother typing an answer, it's best to take a second to be sure the reader can understand.

All that said (or typed), I've found that it's best to give people the benefit of the doubt--both in person and online. Perhaps the writer came to typing late in life, or is in a hurry, or just isn't wordsmith enough to craft a finely-wrought sentence. Whatever the case, if you want to learn about Model A's, it's best not to discount posts with grammar or spelling errors, since there are folks here with a wealth of knowledge who are more mechanically inclined than bookish. Those are the folks we most want to hear from, however their posts look.

I agree, although I know many folks who are very intelligent, but uneducated, and don't spell well. This would include just about everyone who thinks texting is a form of communication. There is usually an obvious difference between spelling errors, and not caring enough about your correspondents to check your writings prior to posting. Typographical errors will always, sometimes humorously, slip by.

Some research has shown that a typed message contains only 7% of the information a face-to-face discussion contains, so I think it is wise to make certain your posting really says what you intend it to say before you hit "Submit Reply".

Thanks Tom,

I am glad you got it.

That's the last thing I wanted to be perceived as, that is, judgmental.

I truly get a laugh from some of the posts and would never intentionally post any thing in the way of criticism. You Ford Barners have been great with all the help you are to me on Ford Barn. I personally couldn't care less about spelling and grammar. I should know, I got a C in grammar and would be the last person to judge other people's grammar. Keep all the great posts coming they are too valuable for anyone to feel intimidated about spelling or grammar to stop contributing. So again, thanks for the chuckles and all your posting help, regardless of spelling and grammar, just keep it all coming.

Thanks, Loumo

I've been on the net since 1993 and have never considered spelling a high priority in forums. Punctuation is even lower on the list.

Your sharing thoughts and knowledge, not writing a book. The most important part is helping each other and having a good time.

I don't think the spelling errors are intentional most of the time. Sometimes they are, but rarely.

Saw this post today on a blog I read and thought it fit perfectly into the discussion here, although it's not entirely related to spelling. I couldn't have said it better myself... Really I couldn't.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7E-a...layer_embedded

The text below is copied from the blog entry.
"In Matthew Rogers' hypnotic video (above), Stephen Fry argues that the enjoyment of language is far more important than pedantic accuracy. Playing with words, and even creating new ones, is what makes language great. Seeing these new developments as new possibilities for, rather than casualties of, writing and speech offers more freedom and creativity in how you communicate. We should still aim to write well and communicate clearly, but choose our battles of language wisely. Personally, I can say my life was a little less stressful the day I accepted the place of "texting" into the vernacular."

Many years ago, like over half a century, I had a chemistry class under a world famous professor that had won the Nobel Prize. His message was: never spend time memorizing a name, a date, or worry about grammer or spelling but NEVER FORGET THE FACT/RESULT. Then with an impish smile he added that his message to journalism students was to forget his message. If an article has good meaty material in it I can certainly overlook a few jabs to the King's English.

There's no doubt; some professors are so smart they're stupid. However, many years ago I had an English class with an ordinary, common sense professor who told us to always be careful with our speech and writing. His exact words: "If you speak or write like a dummy, people will assume you are one!"

I'm not the world's best speller, and that's why I keep a dictionary by my computor. What really bugs me more than an occasional misspelling is the lack of proper language. Has "TO" and "BE" been banned from the English language? I've never heard such language until about 8 years ago when I started reading some of the ebay descriptions. "engine needs rebuilt", "distributor need oiled", "transmission needs fixed", etc. It doesn't even sound right, but more and more I'm seeing "to be" left out of descriptions. I wouldn't think it's to much effort to say or type "to be".

Shakespeare would be horrified!!!

For a long time, reading things like, needs restored, distributer needs rebuilt, rear end needs rebuilt, meant to me that the NEEDS of the object had been redone,or that it's needs had been taken care of.I can read between the lines and I don't care about peoples spelling or punctuation, but it took me a long time to get used to that.It may just be my part of the country that reads into it that way.In a written ad in a local classified you might see, needs taken care of.That means it's NEEDS have been fixed, not that it needs to BE taken care of.

That is it in a nutshell. The information forthcoming from you Ford Barners is much too much important to even consider or have a concern for misspellings.

In retrospect, after all the responses this thread brought, I was sorry that I initiated the thread because I perceived that some feelings might have been hurt, which was certainly not my intention.

Here's this old chestnut, for those who've missed it:

Ode To a Spell Checker

I have a spelling checker -
It came with my new pea sea.
It plane lee marks four my revue
Miss steaks aye can knot sea.

Eye ran this poem threw it,
Your sure reel glad two no.
Its vary polished in it's weigh,
My checker tolled me sew.

A checker is a bless sing,
It freeze yew lodes of thyme.
It helps me right awl stiles two reed,
And aides me when aye rime.
To rite with care is quite a feet
Of witch won should be proud.
And wee mussed dew the best wee can,
Sew flaws are knot aloud.

And now bee cause my spelling
Is checked with such grate flare,
Their are know faults with in my cite,
Of nun eye am a wear.

Each frays come posed up on my screen,
Eye trussed to bee a joule.
The checker poured o'er every word,
To cheque sum spelling rule.

That's why aye brake in two averse
By righting wants too pleas.
Sow now ewe sea why aye dew prays
Such soft wear for pea seas.
