Default Old timey what is it?

An old friend gave these to me years ago and have been hanging on the wall.I was told that they are potentiomerers .Great.What are they used for?I have a feeling that they have something to do with generators. Is that correct? Thanks in advance.

The first one looks to be the most modern. The second one is fairly heavy as it's mounted on slate or something similar and the workings are brass.Kinda pretty though. The third one is fairly heavy as well.Any information would be appreciated.
