35 brake linkage disassembly
Any suggestions on how to get this gem apart? I was able to get the pins out just fine. Was looking for ideas on how to get the shaft out so I can put new bushings in. The linkage arms are cast so I don't as heating with a torch will have a good result.
Maybe throw it in the oven now that I have soaked it in PB Blaster?? Wife would love that.. Thanks |

Re: 35 brake linkage disassembly
Are bushings available for the cross-shafts? I didn't think you could get them.

Re: 35 brake linkage disassembly
If the "rivets" are completely out, and the shaft/arms have no damage at rivet holes, the shaft should come out, maybe with a little light hammer.
I have never found the old/original type bushings for replacement. I use bronze bushings from McMaster-Carr. Most of the time I have found it necessary to replace the shaft as well. I machine new shafts from a standard size OD, CRS bar stock. I also install two grease fittings

Re: 35 brake linkage disassembly
JM, would you be interested in making me a shaft and bushings? Its pretty sloppy..
Just found out about the bushings not being available... super.. I did get the rivets completely out. Tried getting it off with hammer and air hammer to now avail. Will let it soak awhile. |

Re: 35 brake linkage disassembly
I'm told that Early V8 Garage has a rebuild kit for the cross shaft assy.
I will post for sure if they do. Sounds like I'm not the only one with a sloppy cross shaft....... |

Re: 35 brake linkage disassembly
I bought parts for one of those 10 years ago from Green sales. I just seen the parts somewhere a week or two ago if I remember I will post it.

Re: 35 brake linkage disassembly
yes, we are talking the crossover assembly not clutch/brake pedal assembly. I have everything to rebuild that.
Spoke to Richard at Early V8 garage, he sells a kit to rebuild the cross shaft assy or will rebuild there. They are machining the parts. [email protected] Last edited by CSArno; 02-10-2015 at 05:15 PM. Reason: Left out info. |

Re: 35 brake linkage disassembly
Yep, that sounds right. I was referring to Newaygo Kid's claim MAC had the parts, I was sure you knew what parts you had!!!! I looked around quite a bit about 6 Mo. ago and could find nothing off-the-shelf for a 33 crossover and figured I would have to find a similar bushing/shaft or make one. I am well aware it is not a big deal to come up with the parts one way or another. Does Richard's "kit" work on the earlier crossovers?

I'm not sure if it fits the '33. Give him a call 855-268-0325 or [email protected] he is very helpful and responds super fast.

If Richard Lacy is rebuilding these cross shafts, I am sure they are done very well based on my experiences with other assemblies for brake conversions I have bought from him in the past.

Re: 35 brake linkage disassembly
Thanks John, I think I'm on the right track now with the cross shaft anyway.. You're right, itching to get the cross shaft in so we can get the fresh flatty and tranny in before the snow goes. Note the amount of snow in the picture..
Think we've got some time yet... |

Re: 35 brake linkage disassembly
There were a few NOS complete assemblies in Carpenter's NOS department when I went there the last time...Been a year, but they were there for quite a few years before that as well.I had a NOS completely assembly for a 35/6 and another NOS one for a 37 that I sold within the past couple of years.

Re: 35 brake linkage disassembly
Thanks for the great info Norm!
I have the gross shaft all apart. Takes some careful drilling and a few good soakings with PB then some careful hammer work to get the shaft out. I actually used my air hammer turned down and it rattled it out pretty decent. The old bushings are another bundle of joy to get out. I ended up carefully cutting the bushing with a hack saw blade and peeled it out with a small cold chisel. Just waiting on the shaft and bushings to re assemble.. Thanks again, Chris |
