Default Gas tank filler neck

Hello,

I have a 1931 Ford Model A and I have discovered that the fuel tank filler neck is badly corroded.

Is the filler neck easily removable and replaceable?

Did Ford solder the fuel necks into the tank?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Here is a description of the part offered by Snyder's:

GAS TANK FILLER SCREEN
Part # A-9020 | Model Year 28-31
This screen goes in the tank where you fill it. It is actually a flame arrestor. Won't work on the threaded version of the gas tank neck, only the tab version. Due to tab variations you will have to bend the tabs in this once you get it.

I suspect you guys are talking about different things. Fuel filler neck vs filter screen.

You are correct, as the filler neck is badly corroded and I am afraid that the cap will not provide a proper seal allowing vapors to purge from the tank, especially when the outside temperature rises here in Phoenix AZ...

I would like to repair or replace the stem to provide a proper seal.

The cap has to be vented,it can't airtight. The car won't run long with a sealed filler. When the gas gets hot it has to vent somewhere, unless it is leaking gas I wouldn't fool with it.If I have the windshield open I always get whiffs of gas, more so on hot days. The A is not a modern car with a sealed up fuel system.

Yes, it was swaged in and the soldered with something much akin to silicon bronze. While they can be replaced, you probably need to think this through and make sure your skillset matches the task before you. If you have the resources, then by all means give it a go.

Do you perform the repairs?
