Default Water Pump Question Question

I am rebuilding a water pump and when I was cleaning the housing I noticed a small hairline crack in the casting where the impeller bushing fits. It's about 1/2 inch long and seems to fade out to nothing. The 4-bolt mount, yoke and front bearing housing appear to be fine. My question, is this a lethal crack? What would cause something like this?
Thanks...................Pete

Heat? Vibration?

It was probably caused by someone removing or installing the rear bushing. Get another housing and clean it really good before installing a new rear bushing. I like the rear bushings with an O ring seal.

Pete, any crack in the Ford A pump casting is junk in my mind. Years ago people would braze the cracks, but with some good repro and original housings out here, it's not worth fixing them. I still have one here to remind me of that. It was a braze job, looked OK, but one day after just starting the ford up, I got out and luckily the right side hood was open for me to see the water pump was at a 20 degree angle, still trying to do it's thing. I stopped the engine probably seconds before the whole thing gave up the ghost and ate my radiator. Best regards, Pete K.
