no, the drivers side is always the drivers side... make sure you are setting the plug wires correctly

OK, lets start over. I am standing in front of the truck facing the engine. I have a new cap in my hand and it is marked 2-1-5-4 on the left side, on the right it is coil on top then 7-3-6-8. I have those wires where they are marked according to a print out picture of the firing order. Don't ever remember seeing wires going from one side of an engine crossing to the other side of cap ! Maybe wrong, just never seen it. Follow me this far guys ?

It is confusing to talk about standing in front of the engine and using left and right. Everything is from the driver seat, not the front of the engine. If you are going to use front of the engine sides it would be much better to use Drivers side and Passenger side. But again it is much less confusing to just use the standard convention of left and right from the drivers position.

OK, a crab!

I am thrilled beyond words, JSeery nailed it with the crossover wires. I went down and simply changed two from side to side and I guess that was the problem. How can an 83 year old "fart" be sooooo dumb ? I may pee in my panties after have such a hard time trying to figure it out. I am sincerely indebted to all of you for the help and suggestions. Maybe I won't go garbage engine afterall ! Much thanks again, Old and senile Bob

Good to hear you figured out the issue!

As an interesting side, the firing order fires the four corner plugs and then crisscrosses on the four center plugs. This is part of what gives a flathead the distinct sound.

When your working on a engine your likely to be standing ether side of the motor or in the front so facing the Radiator is more appropriate,I would be interested to know if Ford used the drivers seat L&R when referring to Engines ,? Ted

Left is left and right is right, where your standing is not relevant.

Ford did use the driver's seat in regards to right and left. All the service bulletins use this designation.

So long as you specify were your standing like I did (facing the Radiator ) it doesn't matter. To use the term Passenger side and drivers side as you suggest is equally incorrect because it doesn't take into consideration the Right hand drive cars .Ted

If you are going to order a part the source has no idea where you are standing. Right and left is a standard convention for all vehicles. Of course you can use any designation when describing a part, but it sure seems to make more since to me to use the universal standard, but just me I guess.

Do you suppose being left handed or "ambidextrous" is part of my problem knowing right from left ? write left handed, eat right handed, hand gun left hand , long gun right shoulder ? It goes on and on from there !
