Default Compare '39 and '40 Cowl Vent Pivot

Are the cowl vent pivots the same in the '39 and '40 Fords? Drake sells a hardware kit to "rebuild" the cowl vent mechanism. I can see from their instructions that the handle mechanism is different but the piviot area looks the same. It's hard to tell sizes from a drawing but they look the same.

On my '39, the support arm attached to the body the pivot hole looks to be 7/16". The hole in the support, that attaches to the actual cowl vent, at the pivot is 3/8". I know they used a shoulder bolt to attach thhe cowl vent at the pivot. If the 2 holes are the same the hardware will work.

I guess I should ad that I've searched sboulder bolts and other parts. They would cost more due to not getting everything from the same place, shipping. Bying all the parts from one Drake is cheaper, if they work.

Thanks for helping a newby.

Early 39's were riveted.
Later 39 pivot mechanisms look to be the same as the 40.

Thanks I actually have that thread saved in my favorites. I almost pm'd you with a question about if you used a shoulder bolt.

Drake's instructions show the shoulder bolt coming from the outside, 3/8" hole toward the 7/16" hole. I was trying to figure out how they filled the 7/16" hole. It looks like they don't actually fill the hole. They use the friction washers, which appear to have "teeth", they are directional and may provide a little adjustment and then friction to keep it in place with the teeth filling the gag. Drake also mentions their shoulder bolt is "special". You're brass washers are probably doing the same thing.

I know mine is not a restoration so I don't need to be original correct. I just want it to work. Another problem that I didn't take the car apart.

Thanks,

Bill
