Default Front of engine question

Where the timer goes on the front of the engine is this brass oil slinger looking thing. What does it do?

Timer shield, to protect the factory felt oil seal placed in the recess around the cam shaft.

The brass shield keeps the timer rotor from rubbing and fuzzing on the felt creating a mess inside the timer housing.

Not needed if you use a modern neoprene seal in place of the Ford felt.
