I don't have any fancy timing mark device but what I do is once I find number one on the compression stroke I use a mirror and torch to determine that I am indeed totally at the mark. Then I use three dabs of white paint, two on bolt heads and one on the front pulley, all carefully lined up in a straight line. This enables me to crank it to top dead center without the pin and again I check to make sure the hole in the timing gear is centered in the timing cover hole. Then I adjust the timing. (Not for show cars.) works for me.

Marshall - thanks for the link, same to you Mike, didn`t get to it today, other calls on my time, when the sun comes everybody got their own idea on whats important. I have a compression tester so tomorrow I`ll get stuck in, no matter what..............
