Default 35 Jack

Pictured is the jack that came with my car. According to the picture in the 35/36 Early V8 Book, it is part 48-17080-A2 variation made by Noblitt Sparks. I figured I'd try it out for the first time in the garage to be sure it worked, rather than along side the road somewhere at a future date!

It seems that the hinged top would be up for the round contour to contact the rear axle and down for the flat surface to contact the front axle. In each case, at full extension, the jack is too short to lift the tire off the ground. For the rear axle it is about 3" too short. I guess I can carry a small piece of 4X4 but it seems it would have been designed to work without this. Am I missing something here?

The car is totally stock with OEM size tires.

Lin’s tools are for display only, he does not expect you to use it as it was originally designed. You should get a modern jack that can lift your car for emergency situations. I would not add a 4 x 4 to the mix, I prefer at least 2 x 6’s or 2 x 8’s stacked.

.

25 BUCKS ($25.69) @ Amazon, which even qualifies for free shipping! There are some pretty decent scissors jacks in the junk yards for even better cost savings.

I have had several of these type jacks that only moved on stage one and were stuck when stage two should have taken them even higher.

It is a needless risk to use original jacks for anything beyond having their place in a set of original tools for originality's sake.

As David mentioned, why take the risk of using any of those original type jack's. I have one I keep with the original tools supplied by Ford to display at shows, but I also carry a bottle hydraulic jack and a scissor jack as Coop has posted, if/when I need to raise the suspension for any reason while touring.

Thank you all. I think Fordyford hit it when he talked about the second stage not engaging. The rest of you are right too. I'll just get a scissors or bottle jack.

I ran into the same thing a couple weeks ago when I tried the original Jack under my '35 Fordor - it seems too short. I believe mine is the 48-17080-A1 type. I carry a modern scissor jack for actual use. What is the second stage? Maybe mine is not working, but I'd like to understand how it should work.

Find a scrap yard and find a Ford Windstar van.
The scissors jack is what you want from the van -- folds small, includes handle and will raise a vehicle high enough using the frame to remove wheels and tires that have fenders that hide the rear tire, like on a shoebox Ford.
Last 2 that I purchased -- $5 each

Steve,

To answer your question about how it works, I tried extending mine while pulling up on the jack pad rather than letting gravity push down. Another telescoping tube engaged and it extended twice as far as the first attempts. I'm still going with a modern jack for the roadside though.

Thanks Dennis, I'll take another look it.

I tried pulling up on the top as I cranked it up, but the top part would not come out. This is as tall as I could get it. Maybe its just rusted or jammed in place. No matter, I have a scissor jack in the trunk if a real need arises.
