Re: 48 rust in gas tank
I always use swimming pool (muratic) acid first and keep cleaning until everything inside is free of any rust and flakes.

Re: 48 rust in gas tank
Buy a new tank. If the tank is rusty on the bottom you have no idea how thin the metal has become from the rust. New tanks are not that expensive and they are a lot safer than trying to use an old tank. To save time, money and future problems, the new tank is the way to go.JMHO

Re: 48 rust in gas tank
I agree with TJ. I fought the same problem for a long time before I relented and bought a new tank. No more problems.

Re: 48 rust in gas tank
I had a '47 conv that continually stopped up fuel filters until I went to a local aircraft service location and bought some aircraft slushing compound for the tank. That was in about 1978. The car is still on the road with the same tank. Replacing tank is best but a good slushing compound does work.
