Pressure plates
Snyders will sell a rebuilt pressure plate or a brand new pressure plate. The brand new one is $100 cheaper. Are there problems with it? Why rebuild your old one?

Re: Pressure plates
I think that a lot depends on the condition of the one that gets rebuilt. If there were major issues with the old one then the rebuilt one may inherit the issues. When buying a rebuilt pressure plate you really don't know the condition of the old one that was used.
On the other hand, where is the new one coming from and what is the quality? Was it manufactured correctly and put together correctly? I think if you have a good pressure plate that has to be rebuilt, then you should have that one rebuilt and figure out how to get your original back. Ford said in the Service Bulletins that radial cracks are not really a problem and that the surface should be sanded and the pressure plate re used. Snyder's has always supplied good parts to me but as Chap said, give them a call.

Re: Pressure plates
Here are the Pros & Cons. A new plate is made off-shore, and so the plate and the diaphragm springs that come with the foreign manufactured unit are of less quality. While I have not been involved in remanufacturing too many original Model-A/B pressure plates, I have been involved in early V-8 and orphan-brand vehicles. When rebuilding a PP, you can do a better job on the grinding of the plate, and the springs can be weight tested and the heavier rated springs can be aligned in an opposing manner to make the engaging smoother. Also, an original PP can generally be balanced easier since the cover on the older units are stamped more uniformly.
On a new unit, you may need to check/reset/adjust the finger heights, and may want to inspect the plate for a uniform RA finish. With all that said, I have installed quite a few new units that have gone on to provide many miles of good service. |

Re: Pressure plates
Are you talking original style pressure plate or V8 style?

Re: Pressure plates
Call Bert's Model A if you are looking for a quality rebuilt pressure plate. He has a rebuilder who does an outstanding job and sets the fingers when rebuilding the pressure plate. So, you just blot it onto the flywheel and go.
Steve at Berts' informed me they have not had a rebuilt pressure plate returned from this rebuilder. |
