Default Hot hot is too hot

New engine, 80 degree day, running 50 - 55 up a hill, reached 200 degree's, on the level at 48 - 55 seems to run between 180 and 190.

Is this normal. I was pushing it to make it work.

What were you trying to make work ! I am surprised you didn't seize the engine.

Your temps are just what I would expect to see, but not the way you have chosen to break in a new engine.

I like to run a new engine (with the car parked) up to normal operating temperature, then shut it off and let it cool to room temp, then repeat this process 3 or 4 times at a minimum, then recheck the head bolts, then take it for short easy drives around the neighborhood. Vary the speed but not over 35 or 40 MPH for the first few hundred miles. This works well for me.

Be sure to recheck the head nuts until they stay at 55 pounds torque.

I think we all do like Tom has suggested ! To stress the engine to the extreme before a break in period is looking for trouble that will surely be found !

Yes the engine was broken in a similar manner as mentioned in the comment of this thread. My basic question is how do they run --- usually.

You're temps are fine, and if you are using 50%mantifreeze, the boiling point is raised higher than plain water.
