I HAVE heard on all my TV and radio shows today about D-Day.
Long Island's NEWSDAY gave a full page to D-Day today.
Maybe subscribe to other newspapers?

I was taking my history final today when I realized. I was surprised they didn't say anything on the announcements, and even my history teacher didn't know it until I told him and it was on his own final!!!!

If you don't get it don't fret. I posted something on facebook this morning and got very little activity. I never realized that 10,000 French civilian casualties that day. 3400 Americans died. Can you just for one second imagine making the decision for the invasion while being fully aware of those numbers.

Eisenhower and Churchill expected up to 20,000 total Allied K.I.A's at Normandy on the first day. It turned out to be about half of that.

68 years ago my Uncle Jack was landing at Normandy. He was one of six men in his platoon that survived the day. The Germans couldn't take him down but leukemia got him in his late 40's. God bless all our our veterans.

On 06/06/1944 my aunt's husband and his brother hit the beach in Normandy. My dad was in the South Pacific. In 2002, my No 1 son's high school class visited Normandy. My son told his classmates and their guide that he wanted to see what it had been like... so a dozen American teens and a twenty-something Scot rolled up their pants legs, shed their shoes... waded out as far as they could off Omaha Beach... turned... and waded back ashore together. My son and his friends will never forget that day. Kudos to the young men of 1944 AND 2002... for service AND remembrance.

Only mention of D-Day in our sorry rag was on page 6 of section 'C', in a nationally syndicated column called this day in history. Pretty sad, but one of many reasons I have called it the Daily Disappointer for many years. The admonition to subscribe to a different paper can not be done in small town America or in many other locations today. PBS had an interesting program on D-Day, maybe it opened some eyes to the sacrifice and dedication of generations past.

My father landed on Utah beach in one of the first waves. He was wounded in the right shoulder by machine gun fire on June 12th. He was taken back to England and re-joined his outfit in September 1944. He was captured during the Battle of the Bulge and spent 4 months in Germany POW camps. Was "liberated" in early May 1945. He never talked much about his time in the POW camps. GOD BLESS ALL OUR VETERANS, OLD AND NEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought it might be reasureing to know that the Europeans have not forgotten!!

Every year at D Day thousands of people descend on the beaches of Normandy

to pay hommage to the soldiers who fought there and often lost their lives.

Many arrive in WW11 USA army trucks jeeps and Harley motorcycles

that thay have restored

I have also seen French store windows decorated in American & British Flags as well

as other wartime artifacts helmets weapons etc

Lets also remember that many Canadian , British and soldiers from other countries were there as well.

Some one famous said that " If we forget our history we risk repeating it"

I hope our politicians are listening !!!!

I finally saw something on that great American institution CNN about it. the story lasted about 45 sec. Unfortunately, I think we have gone to a memory length of about 15 min. Or until the next 'big' shocking news story hits. My grandfather was getting a sun tan in the S. Pacific at the time and My other was fixing planes somewhere in the US.

On D Day morning at 7 AM I was awakened by a phone call from the son of my Sergeant squad leader of WWII who was in the American cemetery at Omaha Beach, France. He had misplaced the names of my two buddies buried there and he wanted to locate their graves and send me photos. I am a WWII vet, Co B, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division. Probably one of the few from that war active on ford barn site, ha√e never been back to France.

I understand a 12 foot statue of Lt Richard Winters, E Co, 2nd BN, 506 PIR, 101st Airborne Div (Band of Brothers) was unveiled in Saint Marie du Mont, France on 6 June, 2012 as a tribute to Junior Officers of the Normandy Campaign.

Winters had stated he would only give permission if the tribute was included. He passed away January 2011.

I was 2 1/2 months from being born on D-Day my Dad was or still is a WW1 vet. died in 1978. And I had two brothers some were in the Pacific. And I am proud of all 3 of them. well...I'm too young and as a Swiss I don't have lost relatives in the war (ok, in the 11th and 12th century, when we kicked those German and French asses!!!) - but when you're standing at the clipps in France or at one of those huge military cementeries there you have to be greatful to all of those soldiers who helped to win the WWII!!
And it's sad that the younger generation does not know anything about that but they all have 500 friends on facebook...

A couple years ago my wife, two children and I visited Normandy: Point du Hoc, Utah Beach, Omaha Beach and the cemetery, which like the embassy is US soil in France. Actually we took the ferry to Normandy from England so we were able to get a chilling perspective.

Walking around and seeing the craters caused by the bombing, massive chunks of concrete blown yards away, the cliffs of Point du Hoc and Omaha and Utah beaches will be memories that I will take to my grave. As we walked into the cemetery a choir from Georgia sang some American songs. I was overwhelmed and cried.

Talking to the local people it was interesting how cordial they were and how thankful they are. They spoke in great praise of how Americans had given their lives to liberate them.

Yes, we lost a huge amount of men during that landing. Yes, the day and the men should not be forgotten, but doesn't it seem strange that it is not a bigger deal in Europe. Shame on us, but a bigger shame on them.

Every war and every battle should be remembered and each man is a hero, no matter where his sacrifice was made. What an absolutely insane way of mankind settling differences... if that same effort and investment were spent on construction rather than destruction, one can only imagine what our world would be like today...

I am trying to stay within the rules of this forum, and it has nothing to do with Model A Fords, I know, but I can't possibly fathom how my comments can be taken as a political opinion.
