Default rear brake drum with outty or inny?

I just received a few old brake drums and my 1930 has a recessed inny ring around the neck, used for removing the drum. But one of the drums I just received has an outty.... a raised shoulder around the neck in the same spot as my 1930. Is this an older drum, like a 1928? I have never seen one of these. Thanks

1928-29 have outer ring

1930-31 have the recess

They are interchangeable

The hubs are interchanagle but the hub removal tool may not be. I have a realy good one but it had to be ordered based on "raised" or "recessed" groove.

Agreed. I've just made a batch of universal pullers that will work on either. Most cars here are 1928 or 9 so the early hubs are quite common. On that basis, I decided to make the pullers universal.

The puller made by Mitchell is universal, and the best puller I have used.

That's the same as I make. One of those Mitchell devices costs well over $300 here. I'll sell mine at $195 for NO reduction in quality.

The early hub mentioned is the hub with no emergency brake not what you are using.

It is referring to the early 28 hubs and wheels which are the narrow ones. The mid28 to 31 hubs interchange and will accept the wider hubbed wheels from either mid 28 to 29, or the 30-31 wheels.

OK, Mine are the old hubs but fitted with new Cast Iron drums. My bad.
