I couldn't get mine to pop out. I ended up drilling out with a tap drill for a 1/4-28 thread and tapping with a 1/4-28 tap. Installed a new fitting into the hole. So far it is working well and looks almost like it belongs there.

I find it advantageous to file flats on opposite sides before applying the self locking pliers.

Why replace them? They take grease just fine with the original gun.

That's right. I like the original fittings and grease gun, and they work well for me.

I have had good luck using a hammer and cold chisel. With light hammer taps work around the edge of the fitting and gently wedge the fitting up and out of the socket. The key word is "gentle” so you wedge the fitting up and not cut it off!!!
