That "lint" might be evidence of a badly worn fiber timing gear.

Hi MrWarm,
The lint could well be the cotton reinforcing cloth from a decomposing , breaking up fibre timing gear on the camshaft.
Otherwise there is nothing else inside the engine I can think of. But mechanics have been known to leave pieces of rag and pipe cleaners in the valve chamber etc by accident.
Re the oil level, is your dipstick fully inserted right up to the finger ring?. Sometimes the two parts near the ring are sprung apart preventing it from going right down.

Pull the side cover off. Don't forget the two pan bolts on the bottom.

No way that I know of. But the side cover is easy to remove and you can see all the teeth from there.
Or, seeing as you already have the oil pan off, look upwards at the front. Or do you have the inspection plate type pan and this is where you are accessing the pump strainer from?

I have no inspection cover on oil pan the oil pan is off.if it was worn seems like it would be making some kind of noise. this motor is very smooth and quiet

Maybe not the timing gear. Rather a spider got in somewhere and built a nest.

The standard stock Model A Ford takes five quarts of oil for refill after engine pan is removed and than re installed. There is no other answer to that question.

As far as the lint question goes. I have replaced many timing gears, and cleaned many oil pans. I have NEVER seen anything like lint on oil pump or anywhere else in engine.

Hopefully what every it was has been cleaned out.

It is also a good idea to check timing gear on any engine with unknown history. Worn gears will effect the operation of engine. Easy to change. Enjoy your car.

I had a rope seal come apart that covered the pump screen.

I had the same sort of thing happen with a rope seal. It spread a surprising amount of lint that was eventually caught in the oil pump screen.

Rope seal was my first guess. The final answer will be interesting. Pls keep us informed.

Could it be that the last Model A owner was installing his oil pan in dim light or at night; and perhaps, he was, or was not drinking ..... and with or without a mild case of Senior CRS, he just forgot to remove his cleaning rag from the oil pan ...... one never knows about some of us Senior CRS Model A guys.

The most likely cause is the fibre timing gear fretting .It could be a long ago changed gear and nobody thought to check the oilpump gauze as it is mostly obscured by the cover . This was a common fault with the English AF 3" bore engine they produce 28 BHP @ 2600 RPM and it seems the timing gear (Celeron) did not like the extra revolutions . The oilpump gauze looks like it is covered in brown felt and almost completely blocked . The engine stops when the worn away gear finally fails hopefully before the pump stops pumping !!! Check the condition of the steel crankshaft gear as well .

I hate mice! Could have been a nest! I saved a block for foam 12x12x12 picked it up and felt a noise coming from inside. Out of the garage it went, that €ŁĄ! had spiraled into the middle of the block! Did I say I hate mice! They can and will build a nest anywhere the want

thanks for all the ideas off what it might be. after cleaning all the lint off I cleaned it with gas and it looks like fibres from a rope gasket. everything looked good and all gaskets were in the block as they should be so I have no clue how it got there. bottom off pan was spotless. no build up off sludge.as far as the oil level goes it is an after market dip stick. would love to know how far does the dip stick go into the block after it stops. could be its not going in far enough.again thanks for the help. dont know what I would do without this site and all you fellow barners.

Mornin' B.H,
Everyone should consider a Rat Terrier! They're BORN Rodent Killers, even kill SNAKES/GOPHERS/WOODCHUCKS/POSSUMS/RACOONS/ETC--In New England, they use them & other "DIGGER" Dogs to rid the fields of BURROWING Critters
MOST Terriers developed & bred in England, during the BEUBONIC PLAGUE, were efficient RODENT KILLERS
Search Rat Terrier HISTORY, you'll be AMAZED! Also search "DIGGER DOGS" that rid the fields of destructive pests.
NO, I'm NOT a Dog merchant--LOL

It is most likley from the rope seal, on one of my engines, the pulley sleeve had a big chunk broke out of it in a V shape, which chewed up the seal.

Search for old threads on here about various dipstick lengths over the years. I found them researching my particular overfilling problem that was caused by the gallon jug of oil I bought actually being 5 quarts. It was properly labeled 5 Qt, I just didn't notice.
