I found this in my Carburetor today
I have been working on my 1929 Model A Tudor for a couple weeks. It's my wifes car and has not run since 1993.
I removed the carburetor, expecting to use the Zenith rebuild kit I purchased for that purpose but, big surprise, it's a Tillotson Model X. So I started cleaning it, wire brushing all the parts and when I removed the choke plate I saw this on the inside facing surface. Does anyone know what we are seeing printed on the brass plate? Is this unusual or common? |

Looks like home made--- or possibly war time made with what they could get----- it's part of I'd plate from something
I used to cut apart oil filters to see what is inside, some were made with used tin cans---- with labels--- peas, beans |

Re: I found this in my Carburetor today
It looks like exactly the right shape, and if it is a home-made deal, someone went to a pretty good length to get the two notches cut so precisely and square. The choke plate is not critical because if it chokes at all, it is ok, since you only use the choke for a moment or two when starting a cold engine. Unless you want to spend an extra $3.00+, I would just go with it and call it unique.

I think it's really neat. It'd be nice to know exactly why it was there, wartime, broketime or what. Whichever it was it looks like it was done precisely and would work as good as any. Take plenty of photos of it if you reinstall. If I was buying the car I'd want that piece.
