239 OHV vs flathead
Does the 1954 239 OHV share any parts with the 8BA flathead?

Re: 239 OHV vs flathead
I gave away a 54 yblock just last year. Not the best of the yblocks. Lot of odd ball little things. Some can be converted to later stuff though. I'm 99 percent sure the intake manifold is a one year thing, making it a 2 barrel deal. Or maybe a sling shot adaptation. But not 100 percent on the intake.

Re: 239 OHV vs flathead
Had a '54 ohv. Did not like that car or its engine. My experience was that the engine performance was void of any spirit and it had troubles with valve train. The later 289 was a winner .... put a 1965 in my 17 foot ski boat and it really hustled .... still runs too.

Re: 239 OHV vs flathead
Intakes had smaller ports. Edelbrock even made a small port Intake for them. There was a factory 1954 castiron small port 4 barrel used a teapot carb like the 55/56:

Re: 239 OHV vs flathead
Will the later intakes bolt to the 54?

Re: 239 OHV vs flathead
Physically they will bolt up but I going to say no because there is serious port mismatch in the later intakes because of the bigger port size on the later intakes. Some have done it successfully but it really is a hit and miss operation.
The only four bbl manifold that works is the 54 Merc. Pretty rare now a days.

Re: 239 OHV vs flathead
I suposse you could do some port grinding but you'd just be putting hard work into a pointless endeavor. Maybe.

Re: 239 OHV vs flathead
I had a stock, original 239 in a f-100. It ws so sorry, and tired, it would not pull high gear, if any extended grade, however slight, was encountered.
