OK...We have a couple of tools that will let us install the Rear Hub Grease Seal...But do we have a decent tool that will let us remove the seal effecently?
I spent about an hour trying and figuring out a way to remove the seal...Got one, got 6 to go and they seem to be a B%$#@! Tom Wesenberg where are you? Thanks. Pluck |

Re: Rear Hub Grease Seal Removal Tool
Lay a piece of plywood on a concrete floor. Hold the drum with seal side down at belly button height and let her drop evenly to the plywood- the sudden impact of the bearing should knock it loose. Repeat if necessary.

Re: Rear Hub Grease Seal Removal Tool
Steve here are photos of a tool for split rims that I use to remove rear axle seals. I put the drum in a vice and pry the seal out.

Re: Rear Hub Grease Seal Removal Tool
I do what ursus suggest. If the drum is coming off anyway which most of the time it is anyway for new drums, I go outside and drop on the cement. For sure if you drop on cement you want to do outside, it is loud. (: Don't forget to take the lock ring out first!

Re: Rear Hub Grease Seal Removal Tool
The dropping technique works. I slam it down on a towel laid on the the concrete shop floor. Few slams does it. The towel cushions the edges enough to avoid damage to the drum.

X2 on Tom’s method. Any cylindrical piece will work... I’ve used a piece of wooden dowel, you just need a base for the fulcrum for your prying.

Re: Rear Hub Grease Seal Removal Tool
I use a KR Wilson BV81 hub seal/bearing remover tool. There are no current reproductions made. I've thought about reproducing it as it has been incredibly handy throughout the years. There was one for passenger car and light truck and another 3 legged one for large truck.
In lieu of the KRW tool I like Tom's pry suggestion best. I've seen many bearings ruined by folks who pry on the upper bearing cage. some put screws into the seal and use a puller or pry as well. some seals come easy, some hard. I find that sometimes some of the repro seals are to large on the OD and need to be surfaced down for a better fit. For the installer tool for the seal Jeff at Brattons attended one of my KR wilson seminars back in 2014 and he now has a new version for sale. I believe they still have them available Larry Shepard |
