yep been discussed before another day Les was in the hot sun too long.
Just snug'em up. Most of us just use a 3/8 drive ratchet and throttle down on the handle so that our palm is over the ratchet head.

Use 3 or 4 longer bolts that you have cut the heads off as locater pins to make your life easier

wouldn't it be nice what with all the reprinting that has been done if the errors could have been corrected

I used the plastic oil pan installation guides that CarlG pictured in Post #23 above. They work very well. When you have the pan positioned on the studs, just snap the pan up over the studs and they will hold the pan until you are ready to push it up against the block and install the bolts. They appear to be re-usable.
