Default Engine question

How were the model A engines different than the N series tractor engines or were they?

I think they used the same nuts for cylinder head, I don't think much else interchanges
They have more interchange with flathead V8

I think that they are basically one half of an early V8. Does that mean that they use the same head and cylinders, I don't know. around 1940 or 1941 ford put this engine in there pickups as an option. It came with a four speed as they were so underpowered that the three speed was inadequate. Someone that knows something about this will chime in I hope. The engine is definitely smaller than the Model A. Jack

The 8N-9N tractor engine was identical with the four cylinder engine used in the early 40s Ford pickup with the exception that the pickup engine had a fuel pimp boss. No parts were interchangeable with the Model A engine. Bore was smaller. Oil pump ran off the timing gear and was part of the front main bearing cap. The engine was totally insert bearings. Intake and exhaust manifolds were cast in one piece. Definitely lower horse power....Pistons were 3 1/16 I believe.

It is kind of surprising that Henry didnt just use A engines in the tractors.

there must be a reason.

I think that the time to prepare, pour, and machine the bearings was enough to not go that way. The daily numbers going out the door was cars / minute.

The model A engine is 40 horse power and 200 CID so its larger than the 20/25 horse power 120 CID 9N/8N engine. Fasteners might be the only thing that would interchange. As was previously mentioned, there is some relation in design to the 239 V8 engine and some parts are interchangeable with it but not a lot.
