Default Question - C59A crank pulley installation

I’m finally getting ready to button up my C59A flathead and have a question with respect to installation of the crank pulley. Pulley is not original to engine and washer and crank but are new from. Pulley and hardware are from Third Gen. There is a slight ridge on the bore of the outer snout of the pulley which prevents the washer from passing any deeper into the bore. Is this correct, or should the washer pass deeper into the bore where there is a large shoulder?

That looks like a 39 Deluxe / 40 / 41 pulley, yes/no?

Not sure. Mike sold it to me. Needed a wide groove single pulley for my application as the orig was a 3-groove design.

The washer should sit against the wider shoulder further down the bore. The front part of the pulley can be machined off if not being used. It appears to have some historic hammer marks on it.

Mart.

Thanks Mart. Makes sense. I’ll clean up the ridge so the washer can pass. I’ll leave the flanged snout for now. I did pickup a small engine lathe last fall, so it shouldn’t be an issue to part it off if need be.

I think the ridge is supposed to be there so it would be better to skim or file down the washer a bit.

Agree. Looking at the washer it appears there is a bit of a ridge on it as part of the stamping process.

Found the orig washer. Slightly smaller in diameter and a bit thicker. Of course, it drops in albeit a bit too small in diameter my opinion. You can see the ridge/angled profile on the new washer.

Finally got the pulley installed along with the timing cover and water pumps. Pulley fit nicely and butted up against the oil slinger. Crank pulley groove lines up nicely with the pulleys on the water pumps. All is good hopefully.

Folks generally save the pulleys for the crank mounted fan since it was only used a few years. The 1942 through 48 pulleys are more common but a person has to cut the fan sheave off to make a clean job of it unless a person wants to use the 21A style fan for a different application.

My engine was some kind of industrial application. It had a generator mounted fan from what I could tell (it was disassembled when I purchased it). One of the water pumps had a dual pulley arrangement. Tried selling the stuff up here in Canada on kijiji, but no takers. Probably should try on the HAMB. Not even sure if they is a parts for sale here on the Barn.

There is a button to the “Swap Meet” section on the Barn right next to the “Forum” button at the top of the page.
