Exclamation Speedometer not registering

I recently purchased a 1928 Model A Roadster that was off-body restored -- and am enjoying it immensely! The speedo and cable are new but speedo does not register when driving. I am handy with tools as a serious woodworker, but I am unsure how to determine if the cable at the speedo end is not making contact or could it be at the other cable end? As a "still agile" 76-year youngster I can certainly get under the Roadster if necessary.
I have read quite a few previous threads on this FordBarn.com but can't quite find simplified instructions or guidances.
Sure hope to participate more in the Forum in the future.
