Well, we are getting ready to get Joe's '48 Merc back to him but, before we cruise down to Sarasota on Saturday, we still have to adjust the brakes and do a few small adjustments under the car. I was feeling really ambitious this morning (too much coffee I guess) so I went out to give the Merc a bath, and a bit of a shine. I'm gonna miss this Merc, she's one fine automobile!

Check the coil and all the grounds, you can never have enough grounds in a 6 volt system.

Not always, it depends on the size of wire you are using. 6 volt systems require a heavier battery and ground cables. This is one of the problems we ran into with the '48 Merc. In addition to the wrong size cables, there was a quick disconnect attached to the hot side of the battery... Once we changed the battery and ground wires, and eliminated the quick disconnect, the Merc fired right up. Be sure to run an additional ground from the block to the battery, this will insure a good ground for the starting circuit.

Do any of you know where I can find a good trunk handle mount (pot metal piece) for the '48 Merc. See photo

Joe came up Saturday and we took the Merc for a nice long cruise. Initially, when we put everything back together, I left the thermostats in but, the car was running hot so, I removed the thermostats and that solved the problem. On the cruise she ran at between 170 and 180 degrees, climbed up a bit at stop lights but went back down once we were moving again. On a hard stop, the brakes pulled to the left in front so we will have to address that. Joe said that the drums were thin (as per the guy who did the brake job) so he didn't shave them... We could feel high spots on the drums when we adjusted the brakes so... Joe is looking for a new set of drums. Once the new drums arrive, we will install them. At that point the Merc should be ready for many, many miles of trouble free cruisin.

Thanks Tinker, yes it is! Like most 'drivers', it has some flaws but, those of us that like to drive our cars, as often as we can, don't sweat the small stuff... Joe's '48 Merc will make an outstanding driver and a great 'looker' as well!

Well, Friday, July 10th is my birthday... I found something that I would really like, but, I'll need several of my really good friends to chip in to get it for me... Here's a photo of it, it's a 1947 Ford Station Wagon and it's for sale for just $85,000.00... That would really make this a very happy birthday for me... I'm just sayin...

Vic

First, I wish you all the best for your birthday.

I also think I can help with that gift. I pledge my part and will pay 4 and wrap a ribbon around the condensor.
