Found source of noise in drivetrain of '35 fordor sedan

At the Barners Bash in Florida this March, the guys were all telling me I had a noise in the drivetrain of my '35 fordor sedan. I couldn't hear this noise at first due to my hearing loss problem, but when I got back home and put the car up on jack stands, I could finally hear what sounded like someone pushing the edge of a piece of sheetmetal into a grinding wheel.
Took the rear out yesterday and found the driveshaft to pinion spline pin/rivet had come out far enough to allow the peened end of the pin to rub the inside of the torque tube. Put in a new pin and reassembled the rear last night. Hoping to get this all back together today. Gotta get this car back on the road for some driving fun!

I hope that you find the mechanic that did this shoddy work on your car and give him a piece of your mind! This type of work is un- acceptable. The mechanic must have worked for Black & Decker . No quality control

Thanks Admiral. I took great pains in rebuilding this rear and installing 3.78 gears 12 months and ~ 13k miles ago. I believe the problem was caused by me using a piece of 1/4" diameter rod that was a bit too hard to use for that pin. I also peened the ends while the material was cold and that peening let go on one end. This time I used an actual 1/4" rivet, and carefully peened that end after heating with a torch. Maybe others will learn from my mistake.

Of Late there has been a few of your happening's.
What if you got some large shrink tube and after you penn the pin over just before the install you heat the shrink tube over the coller & both pins.
It appears that the car is still driveable with the pin scrapping so if the pin could be made to stay in place you could get more ~~~ MILES to SMILE ~~~

That's exactly what we did when rebuilding my car's rear end. We used a rivet, got it nice and red then peened it over. I also upgraded to a set of 3.78 gears. How do you like that ratio? It seems like a nice compromise between the standard 4.11 and the taller 3.54, though I've yet to drive it.

Also, 13,000 miles in a year ! That's more than some people drive modern cars in the same amount of time!

Well, Jerry said an "easy fix". I think he meant after the rear was pulled. A lot of work pulling the rearend but glad it was not serious. Hope you had some help.

The way that pin is worn it almost looks like the splines in the driveshaft
may be worn.

oldford2/John, Nope, JM didn't have any help for the job. He did it all hisself! On the phone he told me about using a come-along to assist getting the driveshaft into the universal joint, and paying particular attention to the angle of the driveshaft as it was going in.

He'll have to tell more about that, don'tcha think?

John, now you've got me wondering... When I did mine (also 3.78), I reused the old pin, just staking it in with a center punch. That was some years and lots of miles ago, but now I wonder if I'm gonna wake up in the middle of the night thinking about it?

Looks like an easy fix once you got to it. Its a good feeling to know nothing had been torn up.

Years ago I had a mechanic tell me that he never liked working on Fords, but they had made him a good living...

John, I made a new pin for the rear on the 33 and after riveting it over put a small dab of weld on each end to keep the pieces in place if it broke.

Zeke, my wife speaks low, I ask what she said, then she gets mad and yells. It's all good, though, I just dread the day when I have to ask her what I like when we go to a restaurant.
