Default tranmission oil

The second gear syncro on my 46 ford is not working as it should, making shifting very slow.I am using 90-140w gear lube.I wonder if switching to a thinner lube help make shifting better or not.Oppinions? Thanks Phil

I think the second gear sychro brass blocker ring is probably worn and changing the transmission oil to something lighter might make things worse.

When the brass syncro rings get worn to the point that the front face contacts the side of gear before the inner cone of syncro contacts cone on 2nd-or high gear,it will act like a non-syncro trans& require double clutching to shift without grinding. The rings should have around .015" clearance when pushed onto the gear. When the fine grooves are worn off the inside of syncro rings, they are worn out.

Try straight 140 weight. Older syncros need the heavier oil.
