straw yellow powdercoat number
I'm going to have my wheels blasted and powder coated. Anyone know the color number for a close match to straw color? My coater uses cardinal brand powder but can cross reference other brands. Thanks 41plym

Re: straw yellow powdercoat number
I have used RAL-1001 as a close approximation to 'Tacoma Cream,' which I believe is the same as 'straw.' It looks like the attached picture (ignore the blue on the whitewall). I've used this colour in paintshops in both the US and Europe, and have been happy with the results.

Re: straw yellow powdercoat number
I went with RAL 1014 as my approximation for Tacoma Cream. I am pleased with it as are a number of others who went to my Powder Coater. Neither looks like the RAL color chip sheet, but Tiger Drylac will mail you a larger piece of metal with the samples powder coated on them. I do not believe anyone is alive whom was an actual witness to these colors as shot by Ford dealers, so try to match the MAFCA color chip book if that's your pleasure.

Re: straw yellow powdercoat number
I'm going to do my wheels also but how glossy should they be? Should they be a real glossy or more of a satin?

They should be real glossy and very slick as they were originally dipped in enamel and the paint flowed out as they were dried in ovens. |

Re: straw yellow powdercoat number
I would not add the clear coat as that just increases the Mil thickness which makes them much more succeptible to chipping.

Les Schwab is a tire dealer with stores in the west and northwest. They are based in Bend OR.

Re: straw yellow powdercoat number
Some powder coaters can provide special powder coat prime. Try to select a color that can be touched up with enamel once scratched. Not sure clear coating is a good idea as Brent states. Les Schwab is in the western US as far east as Montana, Utah, etc. Some Ford / club collectors have made jigs to rotate wheels for spraying with acrylic enamel, which is easier to touch up when scratched.

Re: straw yellow powdercoat number
Rumor has it that Model A Ford plants did not paint their wheels "Straw Yellow".

There was never any Straw colored wheels offered by Ford, and only after the Deluxe models were introduced in June of 1930 did they even offer colors in addition to the Black. There were initially 4 colors that had to be done at the Branches. A 5th color was added in September of '30, ...and by mid-year 31 they were down to 3 colors in addition to the Black. I realize there is confusion in this but Straw was a striping color only (different type of paint) and was never used on wheels. The closest color to Straw was the Tacoma Crème color, ...AND for what it is worth, Straw pinstripe color was used in conjunction with Tacoma Crème colored wheel colors even though the two colors are different. . |
