I know this is overkill- but just bought a 13k rope winch on ebay for under 250. delivered to my door in under 24 hours!


thought it was a great deal and glad to give the rope a shot. Tired of the metal burrs from the metal cable.


Never do know when your model A is caught down a ravine and will need that 13k pulling capacity!

We have been using the synthetic winch rope for probably 5+ years now and love it. On my Hauler, we 'overbuilt' the rear ramp door and so we had to use a winch to raise/lower it. It has a rating of like 8000#, and when the door is down, we can remove the hook and wad it up to store it out of the way. The same for floor winches on the race car trailer and my enclosed trailer. I also highly recommend these synthetic winch ropes.

This might be a good place to check out my winching question. I recently saw a photo of a Model A being winched ono a flatbed car hauler. The cable was attached to the middle of the front axle. Is the front axle capable of withstanding this? I would have used a strap at each spring perch???

makes much more sense. if the car snags on anything, you bend the axle at a single mounting point.

One thing to watch out for when using the winch rope is that it can retain moisture. Which isn't a big deal for the winch rope itself. But the drum of your winch can start to rust out.

If your winch is out in the rain regularly buy one of those winch covers.

I have a ‘48 Willys CJ2 and have been using the rope for several years now and wouldn’t go back to steel cable if someone gave it to me. It is significantly more expensive but worth every penny (in my opinion).

Rob, this is likely one of those 'He said/She said' myths that someone fabricated and people bought into it because it was believable. The worst thing about attaching to the middle of the front axle is the risk of damaging the lower edge of the radiator apron. Outside of that, for no more than a Model-A weighs, with constant (-or somewhat jerky) pulling action, there is hardly any chance of bending the axle beam.

I really like my fully-enclosed, floor mounted, COMEUP rope winch in my enclosed trailer. The remote control on the winch allows me to be able to walk around and load the car by myself and the synthetic rope is so much easier to use than a steel cable. It is rated for 5000lbs, but does the job perfectly and being fully enclosed gives it a nice clean look while keeping dirt and water out of its mechanism and off of the synthetic rope.

Mac's Tie Downs make a really nice padded Y "Combo Bridle" specifically designed to go over the axel at both ends by the spring perches (use promo code "MACSPAT" for a $25 discount!). It is super easy and fast to put on and will not scratch your axel paint and also no worries about pulling the car by the center of its front axel nor possibly damaging the radiator splash apron:


Here is my floor mounted rope winch setup in my trailer hooked up to a 1929 Ford Model A using the Mac's Combo Bridle:


On the winch rope, there is a thick nylon sheathing to protect the rope from chaffing on the rear, beaver-tail flooring of the trailer, when the car being winched is on the ground, at the end of the loading ramp:
