Default Antifreezes

Hi all, with all the hi-tech antifreezes out there has anyone tried this, Zerex Dex-Cool organic acid Tech. Supposed to be great on corrosion protection of aluminum & rust on iron.

Have you ever seen the sludge build-up in a Dex-Cool system? They can get downright nasty! GM even put out a special video on how to deal with this.
You need a sealed system-one with a recovery bottle and you need to keep the bottle full enough so no air is drawn in when the engine cools down. And a particular style cap is used, having to do with the little vent valve on the bottom of the cap. I forget all the details on how to keep the cooling system clean with Dex-Cool; been too many years. Talk to a GM tech if you know one.

I didn’t know there were so many kinds of antifreeze until I changed the radiator out in my wife’s Toyota, here’s what I found online.

There are three types of antifreeze available: Inorganic Acid Technology (IAT), Organic Acid Technology (OAT), and Hybrid Organic Acid Technology (HOAT).

IAT is mainly used in older vehicles, is usually bright green, and has to be replaced every 30,000 miles.
OAT antifreeze/coolant is usually orange, yellow, red, or purple, and lasts much longer — 150,000 miles — but doesn’t contain any silicates or phosphates for additional engine protection.
HOAT antifreeze/coolant is typically orange or yellow and can last for 150,000 miles

I have 3 newer vehicles, all 3 take a different type and all 3 have been superseded by a new spec more than once. It's very hard to keep up with the changes. All the older cars take the same green. That's way easier to handle.

But if you use concentrate and not the premix use distilled water. I did not one time and had a lot of corrosion on my aluminum heads. We have rally hard water. Learned the lesson

Took 4 1/2 gal’s seems right as I don’t have a heater in the car. I think 5 gal or so is what it’s supposed to take. Seems pretty close. Took out for a ride w coolant about 1/2” from top of tank, stayed around 180-190 & nothing came out of the over fill / over heat blow by tube or what ever it’s called.
Great Late January & all of February in Stroudsburg Pa. Lots of days in the 50s-60s! Had all the toys a lot this mild winter!:

My 35 stays about an inch above the cores when its 80 deg, stays under 195 in slow traffic . 4 1/2 gallons sounds about right

I use Sierra and distilled water in my 50. Mix it half & half. Been using it for 20 yrs and it gets cold here in the winter. Sometimes as much as 20 below zero. What I like about Sierra is it is non toxic to animals.

Not to sound like a broken record, but when this comes up, I always post about No-Rosion.

https://www.no-rosion.com/norosioncoolant.htm

When used with purified (not distilled) water, it provides excellent corrosion prevention when using aluminum heads. If using only water, only snag is you'll need to drain it over the winter if you live somewhere that gets cold enough.

No-Rosion can be used with antifreeze as well.

Even if you don't use their products, there are numerous good articles to read about cooling and various products.

Over the last 5yrs or so I’ve done anti-freeze changes 4 or 5 times in a couple of older vehicles and a stationary engine. I buy the green prestone concentrate and mix 50/50 with distilled water. I’m very careful to get the mixture right and 3 times the level of protection wasn’t down to the -35* that the chart on the back of the jug said it would be.
My point is, you really need to test it after it’s mixed and the engine has been brought up to temp…….Mark
