Default Starter removal issue

In preparation for removing the steering column from my ‘31 s/w sedan, I had to pull the starter. Turns out that the previous owner had installed a “modern” Bendix drive, and the head of it was so large that I couldn’t get it past the flywheel ring gear without removing the water inlet ( lower gooseneck). Which of course meant draining the coolant… what a PITA! Has anyone run into this before? I can see where this would make working on the starter at the side of the road into a major undertaking.

Yes. One of the reasons I went back to the stock bendix.

Wah wah. Have you tried changing the starter on your average modern car? Just saying....

I have removed starters with a modern bendix numerous times. Never had to remove coolant hose. Just have to maneuver the bendix gear around the flywheel. Just takes a few more seconds than the stock bendix.

If you have an f100 steering box you have to pull the water inlet to get the starter out.

By the side of the road? Don’t you carry a crank?

I have the F 100 box and the modern Bendix and have managed to remove the starter with some gymnastics without removing the water inlet.

This is an "old wives' tale". I agree with #6 and #9. It can be done.
