Purpose of the spring around the OD of brake drum ?
What is the purpose of a spring that fits tightly around the outside of a brake drum ? Thank you.

It's a sound deadener to stop the drum "ringing".
I think. Or maybe to assist in heat dissipation. In other words I don't know but am prepared to have a wild guess! Mart. |

Mart about has it! The spring is supposed to resist a harmonic of sorts that can develop under some conditions, and which can result in noise and squealing. They say that the spring tended to help resist the squealing. And any of you old enough to have watched drums being turned years ago will probably remember the tech wrapping and stretching that big strap around the drum before machining. I believe it's purpose was similar. DD |

No No it’s to keep the cast iron from cracking under pressure and repeated heat cycles like the blocks. Unfortunately this never caught on with the block as there was a controversy as to wether they should be wrapped longitudinal or transversally and no one ever thought to do both.
Springs were for noise damping.

Drums are the most abused parts on the car. Along with the clutch and flywheel. Then the folks that replace the brake lining without turning the drums. Sorry got on a box for a second.

Weren't they used on the Model A to prevent chattering if the drums had been turned too much??

And rotors compress and get skinnier. Nope but drums do expand and the large rubber was used to keep harmonics down , noise and vibration while turning . I still use a bungie when turning some steel .

It amazes me that the drums ever stayed together. The area were the lug bolts are seems very thin to me and hardly capable to support the pressure applied and heat generated by the shoes.

Gotta have them springs when they look this good even though you can't see them most of time. Jack E/NJ

On an OEM drum, that portion of the drum is stamped steel. That center is welded to the cast iron drum surface.

Heh-heh. Mine are all cruddy, rusty or missing too. I posted a photo of a nitpicker's drum. 8^) Jack E/NJ |
