model a roadster
Hi I don't know much about model A's. I post a lot on the V8 side, I have been looking to buy a Roadster. i have a friend that has a 29, with a Mitchel and it has 16inch wire wheels with new tires. also has a high compression head, that takes a V8 water pump and a webber carb. the car also has juice brakes and a header. also has a F1 steering box. he is asking 14, grand for it do you guys think that is a good price?

Re: model a roadster
Brendan, if you look at the various price guides & eBay, you will find a wide swing in prices for roadsters. If the body/paint is good on your buddy's car, and all the mechanicals work safely, the price is within range. BUT, many variables come into play;what do you want the car to do, how much can you afford, how much are you willing to spend to make it what you want......?

Re: model a roadster
Don't get mad at me, but I would like an AV8. but I have never had a 4 Banger, I bet I would like it. my friend has promised to some one else first but no money has changed hands. I have ben looking for a roadster that has hydraulic brakes. how much would it cost for the parts to put juice brakes on a car.

As for the brakes... 2K - wow. and to think I've been giving this stuff away to a couple of V8 friends. However, I've been thinking of hydraulics for my 34, and I know the parts are going to be expensive. |

Re: model a roadster
2 grand seems like a lot of cash, I was thinking like a grand. also I like 16 inch steelies with Firestone tires, that would be about 1200, to 1500.

Re: model a roadster
Here's a thought for you. My first A was/is a 31 roadster. My second was a 31 coupe AV8. I wanted a car with more power. Then, I installed a HC head, a cam, a downdraft carb, did a little port polish, etc. on my roadster and found I could outrun my buddy's 35 coupe with a 59-A engine in it. I sold the AV8.

Re: model a roadster
My coupe is a different car with a nice running Model A rebuilt engine, Snyder HC head, touring cam, good carburetor and Mitchell overdrive. Lots of low end torque and great flexability with the overdrive. As far as the brakes go I have cast iron drums and it has good stopping power without the problems (unequal braking, sticky wheel cyls.) of hydraulics. Try it, you'll like it.

Re: model a roadster
well my friends car is sold, he promised it to someone else first. so I found another one.it has a 39 trans, and a balanced motor in it. what do you have to balance the motor and put in the 39 trans?

Re: model a roadster
Counterweights were added to the crankshaft to counter the weight of the crank throws. Too bad Ford didn't do this in the begining. It should greatly help the life of the babbit.

Re: model a roadster
how about the V-8 trans, a 39 box, do you need to shorten the torque tube? and what would you do with the petals

Re: model a roadster
You need a conversion kit to install the 39 box. Check with Berts.

Re: model a roadster
Take it from a guy who has both, Brendan. I wouldn't give up my 4 cyl. Model A for anything ("B" police head) , and I enjoy my '39 V8 as well. You'll like the 4 cyl. Model A!

Re: model a roadster
If you got it for the 14 I think you made a good deal, at least by sunny Fl. standards.
