Default fuel pump on Flathead 6

does the fuel pump on a flathead 6 connect to just the cam, or is there supposed to be a push rod when installed, to operate the pump's lever? Reason I'm asking, when I pulled the fuel pump and pumped it manually with the use of a fuel can, it sprays as it should, but when I place it back on the block and crank the engine, no fuel comes out of the port to the carb. any advice...

There is no rod. The lever runs on the cam. Check the lever for wear and check the cam lobe to see if it is worn. Hope it's the pump.

Check the flexible line from the gas line to the pump. If it is old, it could be sucking air and you will not get fuel to the pump.

I have the fuel line disconnected and have a short fuel line in a gas can, with no fuel pumping... the lever doesn't look worn, but not sure how
it was as new.. got a feeling the cam is the issue.. thanks for tip..

I had this happen to me with an old Ford truck. Finally checked the rubber hose, sure enough it was rotted, had pin holes and the pump couldn't draw. So yes check the rubber hose.

Hey green50. The hoses are new but checked your theory, used another good hose still no fuel. I removed the pump again today and reset in place there was little pressure as the lever touched the cam but very little. I'm taking the pump to an antique auto parts, garage here and ask Tom for advice. When I called he said it's rarely the cam but at this point who knows!
