Default Inside rear view mirror

Hello …. I’m missing something and don’t know what to look for….a project I purchased earlier this year …..1939 Mercury sedan…..has languished and changed hands over the last 20 years and some parts loss I expected….most pretty easy to overcome….I’m about to put the nicely painted and bubble wrapped garnish molding back around the windshield….found the screws ( right number and size I think in one of the many odd containers of parts ) even came with an aftermarket correct style mirror….but for the life of me I cannot find an image of how the mirror is mounted….two elongated factory holes in the garnish molding match up to the base mount of the mirror but there has to be another piece to which the mirror mounting screws attach to…..anybody been there or done that…..

Might have given up too soon….never really installed the garnish molding…..sitting here and thinking about it perhaps with the molding properly installed it will be more obvious to me….

My memory of similar year Fords has the mirror held up by the top center two screws that hold up the molding.

I agree, you should see wear marks at those two screws.

I can post you pictures tonight when I get home from my 39 Mercury. Sorry but that's the quickest I can help you as I don't already have any pictures loaded of that area of the car.

Yep, the top center screws go into threaded holes in the roof panel (10/32 I believe), through holes in a header panel larger than the screws. The header panel is about 4” front to back snd the width of the windshield, also screwed to the roof panel. Made from a thin piece of hardwood. Very tricky to align the garnish mouldings and the mirror base at the same time, a two man job for me on my ‘37. Whoever did the headliner replacement was too lazy to fight it and just left the mirror in the glovebox. Oh, it’s also easier to remove the mirror head from the base to give you a better angle to get those little screws into position.

Thanks all that offered advice….I made some progress today….but limited to reinstalling the garnish molding…dang…you’d almost think they are not original to the car..lol….who knows…
I’ve managed more technical problems but those 12 screws….haven’t got to the mirror mount yet….were frustrating….this all started because I wanted to reinstall the steering wheel but said hey better put the garnish molding in first so I don’t have to work around the wheel…..
