Do Ypu Actually Carry/Use A Model A Jack On The Road?

For practical and safety reasons do you carry and use a Model A Jack to change spare tires on the road? I generally travel alone and not in a group so having help is non existent. If the answer is "no" what type of Jack do you carry and find the most practical? Thanks...

Original Model A jack. Did just fine for 80 years, why change now?

Mine is a driver and I use the screw jack of of a F150 pickup. Haven't needed it too often but it works just fine and it is small enough to fit under the back seat of my tudor.

Yes, it is the only jack I carry, have used it many times----screw type, the ratchet ones are not what i would consider "reliable", they look good in a show box

I use the tire pressure gauge too---and the hand crank

I like the cast iron AA jack, or many of the modern scissor jacks.

The original jack has worked fine for me !

I keep the original jack under the seat riser but use a modern jack when needed.

Have always had and used a 5-ton generic bottle jack along with basic hodge-podge tool kit stashed under the back seat.

I carry an original Model A jack in both my model A fords. When I need a jack on the road or away from my garage, I use them. They work fine.

At home in my garage, I use a modern floor jack - it is quicker, easier, and safer.

I use a little plastic card from the Alberta Motor Association and a mobile phone. Arthritis makes the use of many roadside remedies difficult. Tools in the garage are more conducive to easing the pain..

Which now begs the question,

How many guys have even had a problem on the road where a jack was needed?

I know it happens, but I bet it is not that often these days. Modern rubber holds up much better.

Back in 1988 after I had finished a frame off restoration of my 1931 Slant Windshield 4 Door Sedan my wife and I did a tour of Big Bend National Park and parts of the Chihuahuan Desert. This was in the off season and most days we only passed one or two cars on the road the whole day. On the second day I pulled off the road into gravel to take some pictures and 15 minutes later found two flat tires on off road side. I did have the rear spare and luckily a patch kit but it was over 110F and almost passed out during the time it took to replace one tire and patch the other. Found large cactus needles in both tires and had to run my fingers on the inside of the tires to Feel the needle tips. Here we are 28 years later and plan another trip to Big Bend with the same Model A. There were no cell phones at the time but it would not make any difference as cell service out there is spotty to non existent but this time we are taking family along. I doubt, at my age, I could duplicate the past experience without having a stroke! Thus the question on using a Model A Jack....

This is why people shouldn't speed and tailgate. You can't see what's going to happen, and you don't have time to brake or turn out of the way. Last Friday coming back from the swap meet in Le Sueur we passed 8 cars on the side of highway 169 in a 5 block stretch. Something was in the road and all 8 cars and trucks had torn tires.

I have used a Model T screw jack in all my A's for years, it also works great for when I need a small "Porta Power" in the shop. The aging body is starting to require a long handle jack though,now so I don't have to get under the A.

Come to IL where you get to play the interstate game of "dodge the landmines" a few stretches your better off going most of the way on the shoulder to avoid potholes that look to be 4-6" deep and about a foot or more wide...this is going 65-70mph too...

if i do have a tailgater usually they start following in your tracks - thats when you line up a piece of roadkill then at the last second swerve around it they usually get the hint. Never will forget the time my blazer could clear (barely - i heard it hit) a big coon but the bmw behind me could not haha, plastic airdams dont hold up to well...

I cant speak for model A's but in my moderns I've had 5 flats while traveling. 2 were screws which can happen anywhere, one was a soybean stalk thru the sidewall, one was my own windshield washer tank bolt (fell out of the fender, bounced out of the engine compartment and right into the rear tire) and one I dont know what I hit but it just went flat in a hurry while I was driving.

I've not had the unpleasant situation yet of changing out a flat (knock on wood) on Sarah, I do carry a modern jack but the one I would rely on more would be my Model 1882224357, guaranteed to work by AAA but only if I have coverage for my cell phone. .....

why make it harder on yourself than it has to be? I just have a small scissor jack under the back seat. If I ever need it, it has a larger base than the model A jack, which makes me feel safer in the event I'm on an incline or a non paved road. I luckily have only had Model A flats while in the garage... after installing new tubes.

Got a scissors jack out of a '64 Cadillac pop had any many years ago.

Figure if that can hold a 5,000 lb. Caddy woks good on a 2100 Lb. Model A and indeed it does!

My daughter was driving one of my roadsters when she picked up a roofing screw in the back tire. She was 15 miles from home. The metal stem was ripped out of the tube getting to the shoulder. No jack, but a kindly stranger stopped and went to his place and got a floor jack and socket set to help her out. We will be carrying a jack this driving season. Thank God for kind strangers.
