Trouble with my 36!

I have been fighting hard starting with my 36 pickup. Last Wednesday I drove about 30 miles, it was warm hear. I stopped and filled up with gas and went to see a friend. then I had to go see a guy about some things. saw him for about 20 min, then got back into my pickup and would not start. then it would start and stall. it acted like it ran out of gas, it stalled
then start , I would feather the throttle and it quit. pull the choke step on the throttle crank and crank. then a dead battery. Dammit!! then I call AAA for a tow. the operator asks what model pick up I have I tell her it's a 36
ranger. as I am hanging up the phone the local tow co calls me and wants to clarify some things. she asks my what kind of pickup I have, I say it's a 36 Ford Pickup, she says ok. I never bring a tool box with me on short trips, this time I wished that I did. well I get it home and the driver backs the pickup into my shop. then I put the battery charger on the battery. the next thing is I take off the fuel line to see if I am getting gas. crank the motor and fill a glass jar, but not as much fuel as I would think. I pour the fuel into the carb and the motor starts right up. then I put it back together and turn it around so I can work easier. out in the street it starts to stumble and run rough, it is quits I an screwed. then I wont be able to get it into the shop, but I make it. the fuel pump is very old it has a patent date of 1948, I have ran it for about 5 years, I have been running on barrowed time. I have kept a new one, on the shelf. so time for the new pump. put it on, start it up, and running rough. the float has been giving me trouble , so off comes the top, start the motor, and watch. hold the float closed and it starts to run rough and stumble, hold it open and it soothes out. so I give it more float. now I think the old truck is very happy. I just need a hot day to see... Brendan

These old Fords do have a habit of getting us upset on occasion. Looks like you found the problem with yours. I am putting a Southwind heater in mine but can't get it to fire up. Will piddle with it some more tomorrow. All NOS parts so it should work.

Lawson, I think some times you have to swear and cuss at your old Ford! I think my Pickup like it, I call it a Old Bastard!

BRENDEN make sure the pump you put on has the new type diafram for todays fuel also the flex line make sure the needle valve don,t have the soft tip.

Good story Brendan, well good for us to hear what could happen. I haven't got to drive my '36 truck very much, now I have the whole rear end pulled out & waiting for parts, so it will be awhile before I get to know this truck, how she acts. When I did drive it around, slow at that, I was nervous, thinking I was gonna break down and have to make that call, it runs great in the driveway! HaHa.

I would remove the chrome air cleaner or even just the filter element and see how it runs with out it. They are known to be very restrictive causing running problems.kwn ct.

I had that trouble before. I have a K and N filter in it, I can hear the motor breath, as soon as I put it in and started it up it ran so much better

Brendan, I have such troubles once in a while after much trouble shooting and worry it usually turns out to be a faulty condenser.

It seems that most fuel problems turn out to be electrical, and vise versa.

I am purity shure that the trouble was fuel. the only week link was the fuel pump it was older then me, and the other week link is the flex line...Brendan

If cussing at it doesnt help threatening to replace it does. My old mans truck is the best its run immediately after we threatened to get another truck.

Last week a Friend of mine, 1932 V8 hear on the barn gave me some rear shocks for my pickup. yesterday I got all the parts to put them on and I did. WOW! what a difference! the old truck is very happy, it dose not rattle and squeak as much. also I can't believe the ride. when I got the truck all four shocks where junk. I think only one was good, one front one was hooked up and it was frozen and the rear where not hooked up. I was able to get some front ones when I rebuilt the front end a couple of years ago. and I just put the ones on the back. Thanks Mike...Brendan

Oh yes. They do drive better with good shocks.

I have always been told that when my grandfather had an old Dodge touring that he had beaten the radiator into a U shape. He would crank it for a while and then beat on it for a while with the crank.

Another old timer told me he cranked his car `till the raaditor (that is the way he pronounced it) boiled over and it never did start..

Brendan, making good use of your free time. Glad to hear you got your rear shocks going and the ride is smoother. Did you install the original style or tube type.
