generator paint
Just curious what everyone is using to paint their generators? Getting ready to restore mine. Would like it to look as correct as possible. Have some plastikote left from restoring my carburator and was wondering were generators and carburators painted the same?

Re: generator paint
I just took apart a generator that looks to have never been painted--or rebuilt, it was obvious that it had been painted after assembly, the areas that were covered by the end plates, and cover band have no paint ----when painting you have to be aware of the electrical path---brush--end plate --field housing, through bolts to front plate, then to the engine at the mounting ----gloss black enamel

Re: generator paint
As Kurt said, GLOSS BLACK enamel will look right. I find many spray cans of gloss black look just fine. You don't want thick paint, nor super shiney paint, like the fenders have. Use the same paint for the starter and distributor. The carb and cast sediment bulb were more of a dull black.
Here's what a can of spray paint looks like on a powerhouse. Depending on the temperature I'll give it two thick coats, or three thiner coats of paint. Last edited by Tom Wesenberg; 07-23-2012 at 01:12 AM. |

Re: generator paint
thanks for the feedback. When I bought my car the carb, starter, gen, dist, were all painted the same dull black. Didn't think that was right, but wasn't sure where to go with it. That powerhouse looks good. Just curious, what brand spray can did you use? Chris

Re: generator paint
I bought the cans of spray paint at Menards and the label just says "TOUCH 'N TONE" and the address on the rear says ROC SALES Vernon Hills, IL.

Re: generator paint
Marco is the expert, and that is what it should be.... I haveused electric motor rewind paint on the inside...it is a dull red and seals some..when I have taken original parts apart I have seen that red on the armiture ...
I use this same paint inside my rebuilt motors and differentials...it seals the porus cast irom and helps make the oil return quickly...parts must be totally oil free, but once it is on it sticks well...and oil does not bother it ....nice stuff...electric motor rewind paint.. |

Re: generator paint
I paint my generator, starter, distributor and carburetor. semi gloss or satin black. Semi or satin are really the same, just a different name and have a nice sheen instead of flat.
