1951 Merc front brake plates
Ready to put new shoes on the front and noticed that a couple of the rub nubs are worn and one has a burr on the outside edge. Can these still be used?

The new shoes can hang up on those wear grooves.
You need to build up the worn spots and grooves with weld and then grind them flat. |

Welding it up should work fine.

Re: 1951 Merc front brake plates
I'll send you some pics. I guess my question is how much "pride" do the rub points need from the base of the inner plate?

Re: 1951 Merc front brake plates
No "pride", just flush with the inboard original surface.

Re: 1951 Merc front brake plates
This is one of those things that I use brass on. The brazed area seems to last longer than the original steel.

Easy fix but if you want an complete front brake assembly, including drums as a spare, I have the ones off my 51 Merc.

Re: 1951 Merc front brake plates
Fixed mine using Stellite weld rod to virtually eliminate possibility of wear.

Re: 1951 Merc front brake plates
Who knows how many years these old car have gone without any lubriplate being applied to those pads. Shade tree mechanics seldom ever applied anything to them when performing a brake job.

Re: 1951 Merc front brake plates
New photo to post for Keith. Appears to me there is a fairly small area that needs addressed (welded in and dressed down) right where the edge of the brake shoe rides.
