Default 54 Merc fuel pump replacement

Hi all,

Helping my father out with his '54 Merc. Mechanical fuel pump had been bypassed by a previous owner, and an electronic had been put in pretty ugly. I pulled the bad pump, which had a cracked actuator arm. Ordered a new one from Kanter but got a completely different pump (picture attached). New one is double action, old one is single action, and the arms don't even come close to being right.

Can anyone tell me where I can find the correct replacement pump? Absolutely no markings on the old pump, not even a manufacturer.

Thanks,
Nick

Forgot to mention that I found this:

http://www.macsautoparts.com/ford_me...fuel-pump.html

Still different, but looks like it may work. I just don't want to waste money and time ordering this if it's not the right fit. Any thoughts?

Nick

Look at these pictures: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from...+pump&_sacat=0 Notice the difference between 1954 fuel pumps and 1955 and later fuel pump arms? Before you proceed further you might want to verify your block code to see if you really have a 256 Merc, the 239 Ford and 256 Merc were one year only so there are some parts that do not interchange with 1955 and later, camshafts were one thing which is what drives the fuel pump.Check out this for your block code: http://ford-y-block.com/Block%20identification.htm

This one is pictured upside down. Note that it does not have a fuel filter like the left hand one in your posting. The Mac's one was also used on the 55-57 Tbirds.

In your original posting, he left one was the dual vacuum unit used in cars. The other one was a single vacuum unit which was also used in cars.

That Mac's pump is for a 1959 FE 352,not going to work.

I happen to have this shot of what I believe is the original fuel pump of a low-mileage 239-V8 '54 Ford Country Sedan, if it helps you understand how the '54 Y-block pumps differed externally from later ones. Its glass-bowl filter was on top rather than on the bottom. This is a dual-action pump with the wiper-boost lines running down alongside the carb line.

I also just recently worked on a pretty original '54 Mercury and it looked like the one on the '54 Ford also. Glass bowl on top and dual action vacuum part on the bottom.

if you have vacuum wipers you will need the dual action pump, also a lot of the times when an electric fuel pump is used the fuel pump lobe on the cam is worn down and wont let the fuel pump arm work

On a Y block the fuel pump cam is a bolt-on piece on the front of the cam, not a lobe on the cam itself. I have never seen one worn out in almost 60 years of Y blocking. John

The one on my '54 Mercury looks like the one shown on the left side. I'll also back it up with an electric pump. Joe

1954 pumps were all upside down. It was a one-year-only pump

Hi Nick : I have three rebuilt '54 Mercury dual action pumps (spares for my '54). I only need one and will sell one for $50.00 plus shipping if you want. Bruce

Hi again Nick : Looks like I had a brain fart as you already have the correct double action pump. The one in the picture as already stated is shown upside down so just use it and hook up the vacuum lines for the wiper and drive on. Cheers : Bruce
