What kind of dye, how many coats and was it able to penetrate the surface?

How were you able to clean it and did it require any nasty solvents?

I painted mine with the same chemicals used on modern plastic bumpers. It (flex agents) expands and contracts without cracking.
If memory serves, it took three light coats to get the depth of color I wanted.

I bought a quart of SEM vinyl dye that I had mixed to match a piece of original top material that had been under the rain gutters. I followed the directions on the can, 2 coats covered evenly, still looks good today, was applied in 2013. Still have some in the can. Cleaned the top with wax & grease remover which is a mild reducer before spraying.

Kube and deuce,

I checked out some of the plastic bumper dyes and the SEM dyes. Looks like there are a few great products that will do a nice job. Good to know it will last for ten years.

Thanks for the information on how both jobs worked out!

Lovely - really like the colour. That's what my LB top material roll looked like too! Hope yours is the correct length.

[QUOTE=Karl Wescott;2254677]I have 1/3 roll (about 100 yards), 66" wide, in stock of fine grain vinyl top material (used on Model A sedans).

Hi Karl - can you tell me more about this? Where are you based? Thank you. Ed

One very handy tool for this job is the special upholstery material pliers with the 3 1/2"" wide serrated jaws to provide a sure grip on the edges of the top material when stretching it across the top.
