Barners,
I could not take it anymore! it had been weeks since I had the 32 out. Weather was cool but roads were dry and the day was waning.
Looks like a lot of my other rides, but each one is special!

That new glass is nice! with the felts in place. less ratting noise from those! They work well too!

Folks,
Called the machine shop on the "B" block work. It has been set aside again for other hotter jobs. I mentioned I would be ready for it soon, as the maple season was coming to a close. Would like to work on it in April (this year)
I think I may get a new gear (driver) for the oil pump/ distributor.
I did clean my sap lines today. Officially done for the 2022 maple syrup production.
Hope things are good in Ford land! Tis going to be spring soon, when a young mans thoughts turn to buying some other project!!
Regards,
Chris

Folks,
I did not do much today, lazy I guess. Headed to the shop for a hour or so to play with the 32. The sideboards and stakes needed fastened together. Several suggestions were made as to the correct version of fastener that might look correct.
I was given two cabinets with the small plastic drawers filled with stuff screws, bolts nits misc stuff. I started through the drawers and came across these very large wood screws with a slotted head. Those had the look and the patina for me. Drilled and countersunk for the screws:

I think they are going to be fine:

Turned all the screws horizontal:

I have a couple more small pieces of black walnut to add as spacers:

The shop that will do the name painting suggested lettering the same color as the truck cab. Not real showy. Might look just right.

Thanks for checking in on me. Hope things are good in Ford land!
Regards,
Chris

Aligning the screw heads is always the sign of a quality job.

Mart,
Thanks! A lot of folks do align the screw slots in things. Most of the time it doesn't matter to me. But my grandson who does the electrical work has every screw in outlet covers going the same direction, always! He also always clicks his battery powered tools to the neutral position after each use.
Have been following your engine work too. You do a great job of getting us in close to your work!
Regards,
Chris

Chris,

I love the inherent conflict of the aligned screw slots and their rusty heads. For some reason it strikes me as being just right.

Yes, I agree they have the right look. Your whole truck is period correct! Sometimes the alignment of screw slots can have a practica; purpose. I have a friend in Mt Vernon Wa that has completed an astounding restoration of a WW2 Half track built by White. These vehicles had hundreds of flat head countersunk slotted screws holding armor plate and many other parts together. I noted that every slot was perfectly vertical. I mean perfect. He told me that was the correct way because in the morning, hiding in brush or woods etc, the dew would collect in horizontal slots and become a droplet. This droplet could reflect light, revealing their position to the enemy. He also added that it was an extremely tedious task. Duh.

It's my opinion that the patina and slotted screws are perfect, as well as the walnut once it gets aged from sun and air exposure. Maybe a bit of hairsplitting regarding horizontal or vertical alignment it's owner choice, however if I could be so bold I would offer that on a hard working truck of that era under repair/replacement who would have cared otherwise as long as the fastener was tight? Nonetheless when I install the cover plates on my home electrical switches/outlets I always orient the slot vertically to allow moisture to run downhill through the slot.

Those look just perfect Chris, I'll bet that old truck is going to have lots of miles on the odometer this summer.

David, Gary, tinker, Al, folks,
I did not think about the moisture running out of the screwdriver slot! My horizontal approach should allow moisture and dust to increase the patina. Humm didn't think there would be that much attention to those old slots, but forgot who I am talking to here on the Ford barn! Awesome information as in the military alignment of screw slots too!
Mine just happened to tighten down in that position.
I would agree that a working truck of this type would not have been concerned about screw slot orientation at all!
Regards,
Chris

Folks,
My next small project is going to be the interior side foot panels which are about 12 inches wide x 24 inches high. These look like they were a black vinyl over a stiff cardboard. Was thinking of making new backers boards and covering in same material as the seat, which is a dark blue)??

Also is the interior wind lacing. The drivers side is all but falling apart and gone. Was considering using the same blue material to cover new cord for that too?

Of course ideas/ suggestions/ recommendations are welcome as always.

One area of concern is that it looks like the wind lace tucks between the dash and the side of the truck interior. I really done want to take the dash out for that.

I should try to find a speedometer cable for the truck too. Snyder's has one the right length but for a 31 AA. Might be the same or fit a 32AAB?? Anyone know for sure??
Regards,
Chris

Give Rusty at Speedometer Service in Colorado Springs a call. He just finished servicing the Stewart Warner speedometer for my '39 p/u. He was able to look up info on the cable length for my truck. But an actual measurement from an existing cable is still the best way to go. He can probably make one up in the length you need but as with everything his cost of parts has gone up considerably. He is knowledgeable and an all around good guy to deal with. IMO

Bob C, Folks,
John (42 Deluxe) Called while Jim Bugs and Tugs) were on the road to review a 1978 Ford truck. He confirmed the same thing on the spedo cable. So I will roll the dice and order on from Snyder's in the near future.
Thanks for the tip in the guy in Colorado Springs Never know might need him too!
The 78 truck we looked at today looked good from far , but far from good! Decent looking truck, that like a lot of them has been rebuilt from many other trucks and painted.
Regards,
Chris

Only a handful have the luxury of acquiring a perfect untouched or used vehicle. I suppose we all have to compromise a bit when we work on one. Some bolt a fiberglass fender on, some repair the steel. Sometimes it takes 3 to make 1. Even better if it's old parts.

Tinker, Folks,
Yes vehicle that is 40 to 90 years old may have had some things changed on it for sure!
Not sure I will be a player on the 79? It has a lot of rust in the components from being in the rust belt.
For some reason i have a want for a 70's or 80's pickup too. Spme of the features desired:
Ford
short bed,
4x4
4 speed
single or supercab
two tone.
XL, XLT, or Lariat
green prefered color
from out west would be good to minimize rust.
I have located one with most of those features, just need to bring myself to pull the trigger. Not a cheap date. A long way from home. and may not be a high value truck?

Here are some pictures of the soft parts for the 32 that need replaced in the cab:
The side panel:

The windlace material:

Off to work in the loft of the shop to put up hemlock wall covering.

Regards,
Chris

Chris, I use an ‘81 F100 as a daily driver from no snow till it snows again. It’s got the 300 cu. in. six. 20-21 MPG all week long. It’s got a lot of vacuum controlled smog stuff under the hood. It gets a lot of comments and is a good back-and-forth to work and dump run truck. I’m always on the lookout for something earlier……..Mark

Mark,
Yes the one I like from out west is a 1983. Not as desirable as the late 70's trucks. I skipped the 80's and did not have any new Ford trucks in that decade. My dad bought a new 1980 and it was a brute of a farm truck. Hauled what every he loaded. F250 2 wheel drive. Ugly flesh color. I had 3 or four of the 300 6 cyl engines. And the 83 has that engine too. Not afraid of it they were good engines!
Do I need another toy? No! It's old man with a young guys brain!
We need a picture of your truck!
Regards,
Chris
