Ford Starter
I see ton of used 6v starters for tractors. Does anyone know if a tractor starter will work in a car? How would I cross reference it. Can I cross a truck to car starter? thx

Re: Ford Starter
Tractor starters are a different set-up than autos...… I THINK …… and car starters can be swapped for trucks too.

Re: Ford Starter
I think the 6 cylinder and 8 cylinder starters are not interchangeable.

Re: Ford Starter
An 8N tractor (6V) uses the same starter as a 60hp flathead. Your local New Holland/Ford tractor dealer should be able to supply parts for them. Their parts books ever carry the 52-part numbers. Even the starter drives work on 60hp engines.

Re: Ford Starter
As I remember, and it was years ago, it had to do with the length of the shaft. Mine was to short or to long. I can't remember. I think the bolt pattern was the same, but that was a long time ago. His starter was at the shop getting rebuilt and he wanted to start his car, so I took mine out, but it didn't work.

Re: Ford Starter
If i remember right the fordomatic/mercomatic starter has a different front plate with 3 bolts one tab sticking out from it with an extra bolthole.
And a 9 tooth sprocket. Last edited by flatheadmurre; 12-09-2019 at 12:38 PM. |

Re: Ford Starter
Starter shaft is longer for the flathead V8's with automatics as compared to V8's with standard transmission.

Re: Ford Starter
I wonder if the shaft length is the same deal as the V8. Will the shorter one work on a 6 std?
Wonder if they are both 9 tooth I do know the V8 has an L shaped clip that the 6 does not have |

Re: Ford Starter
I looked in the Hollander Interchange and it shows 51-53 pass 8 cyl automatic, 52-53 pass 6 cyl overhead, 52 truck 6 cyl overhead, 50-53 Merc automatic.
Starter catalog shows #3108 5 3/16" shaft ( which I think is the short one) one mounting ear. See link for picture. http://www.wilsonautoelectric.com/Pa...7-e690abfc15fd Bob |

Re: Ford Starter
I'm beginning to think the difference is not 6 vs 8 but auto vs std.
Did it show what std transmissions interchange. |

Re: Ford Starter
It’s funny because the 52 and 53 Ford parts book do not show a starter for 6 cyl std. I know they made one because I have one!
Wondering if I could get an end cap for my car and put on a tractor starter? |

Re: Ford Starter
It depends on the parts book. Most Fords used the same starter for years until they started bolting them on with ears off the rear bearing plate. A lot of parts internally were still the same. The 9N and V8-60 as well as the 8N all used the same starter and they bolt on same as the early 221/239 V8 but they have a different armature and rear plate. The only difference between the flathead V8 starter and the two flathead 6 starters was the little bracket that attached to the oil pan. The later overhead valve tractors have bolt on flange starters like the automatic transmission cars & pickups. The armatures are a different part number though.

Re: Ford Starter
2N,9N,8N use the same starter. The 60hp flathead uses the same starter and starter drive. The starter drive on tractors and 60hp engines attach with a pin and not set screws and a woodruff key like the other V8 cars and trucks.

Re: Ford Starter
The 1952 parts book shows FAE 11002-A and the 1959 parts book shows
replaced by FAJ 11002-A only shows a different starter between standard and automatic for the V8. Bob |

Re: Ford Starter
According to my 1953 parts book for the cars. The 215 6-cylinder with either transmission takes the same starter P/N FAE-11002-A. It calls out the use of the 1CM-11350-C starter drive for it. It also calls out the same bolts to bolt it on for automatic or standard. The six cylinder 215 does use a different transmission plate on the back of the engine for standard transmission use than the one for automatics but evidently the starter is the same for both applications. The starter drive is also the same for both applications. The 1CM-11350-C starter drive is the late type with the pin that holds it to the shaft.
The 1955 truck parts book calls out the P/N FAJ-11002-A for the 215 with the Mercury P/N 1CM-11350-C starter drive just like the earlier starter. One likely replaces the other. This starter drive was also likely changed to a different part number under a later modernization. I know that starters are available for flathead V8 retrofit that use this type starter drive. |

Re: Ford Starter
That is a lot of valuable information. Thanks. I do have a question about the starter with the pin that holds the shaft. I don’t know what that is? Can you tell me a little about that?

Re: Ford Starter
There is a spring loaded collar on the drive at the tip of the armature shaft. The collar has to be pulled out of the way in order to push the pin out to free the drive for removal. Install in reverse order of removal.
