is it normal for gas to drain back out of a in line fuel filter, seems like it
takes a long time to gas back to the carb if i have not run the car for a while. also i know a guy selling a 58 ford rag top with a continetal in the pittsburgh area if anyone is interested, black with white top. |

If there was a small hole, or loose line between the filter and supply pump, yes. Also it could be the carb is leaking the fuel into the manifold while sitting.

Re: 59 ford gas
It drains out of my inline filter and there are no fuel line leaks anywhere. New or old filter. New or old fuel pump. Always did that but only after setting for a few days without starting engine. I don't really care though, because my car runs daily unless I am doing a repair job that lasts more than 4 days. That is very rare.

Re: 59 ford gas
It's caused by the way they are vented a very common problem with old Fords, the most common cure is to mount an electric pump back by the tank as a pusher.

Re: 59 ford gas
My first thought...
When a car sits the gasoline will evaporate out of the fuel bowl of the carb. (bowl vents, & residual engine heat) As the float level drops the needle valve will open, letting air into the top of the fuel line. If the check valves in the fuel pump don't seal perfectly this allows the fuel line to gravity drain back into the fuel tank because the top of the engine and fuel filter are higher than the tank. A fiber or phenolic plastic heat spacer between the manifold & carb may delay how soon it happens. I'm guessing an aluminum spacer probably transfers more engine heat into the carb than a fiber or phenolic one. Yes, an elect fuel pump wired to the ignition can refill the filter and carb before you crank the engine over. Last edited by dmsfrr; 11-04-2014 at 02:45 PM. |
