Simple stuff - Alternators with internal regulators have one wire permanently wired to the battery. A second wire from the alternator goes to the ignition switch run position through an indicator lamp. That's it - pure and simple.

Two voltages to know: a charged battery at rest is 12.6v. A battery being charged from a good alternator is 14.6v - any rpm above 600. Voltages give or take 0.1v

Any chance you plugged the alternator in bass-ackwards?
