Lube oil is made from lube crudes. Any old crude won't make quality lubes. The lubes have to be in the crude to begin with. Making lubes is the process of removing what isn't lube from the lube cut on the crude unit vacuum tower. The first process takes out the aromatics. The second process takes out the waxes which are the straight chain HCs. The waxes are taken out so the lube oil doesn't turn into a solid at low temperatures. The lube oils are dewaxed to a pour point of 0-10F. What is left is lube base stock. Then add 30-40% of additives and you have automotive lube oil that you can buy at Walmart. Once upon a time back in the 80s I scheduled production at a lube oil plant that made 500,000 gal/day of lube base stocks and waxes.

Oh course now lube crudes are getting scarce and non-lube crude gas oils are hydrocracked to make lubes out of them.

It is a viscosity modifier to make thin lube oil into thicker lube oil.

I think for Meropa 680 it was $52 for 5 gallons. Likely it has gone up since 2006, but I would not think it has gone up to $35 per gallon. If you paid that price someone fleeced you good. Rod

According to STP their additive is designed to be mixed with oil not run straight.

That 680 stuff gets very stiff in cold weather. Good for summer driving. Here is 600W the 460 stuff: http://www.mobil.com/Egypt-English/L...inder_Oil.aspx
http://www.amazon.com/MOBIL-600W-SUP.../dp/B00G97EIJ2
I've tried both. 680 great for a hot summer makes shifting a breeze. In cold weather it takes two hands and a lot of muscle to shift.

Merpo 680 is now $88.81 for 5 gallons. Some of the local Model A people mix in 20% Lucas oil stabilizer. Rod

Even OLIVE OIL feels SHLICKERY, don't put some unknown, strange stuff in your car, just because someone said so!!! I once checked out with 4 grocery items & a quart of PENNZOIL, check out artist, Richard, inquired, "And what are we cookin' tonight"?

I would think they would push one to use 100% of their product to increase sales if they thought it was ok to use that way. I for one usually follow manufacturers instructions. Your results may vary.

Thanks to the knowledge in this forum; I have drained my transmission and put 600 wt oil from a local Model A supplier, and then added about a pint of STP.

This does seam to work much better than the straight STP. By the way, 24 hours to drain the STP, and looking inside, with the shifter cover removed, there was a sticky coating on everything.

Thank You again for the knowledge.
