Default High compression head

Is there any way to externally distinguish a Snyder HC head from a stock head? Thanks

Different combustion chamber than a stock A head.

A vast majority of the stock Model A heads will have a small raised casting mark on the top of the head in front of the water outlet above the boss for the water pump. The Snyder's head is smooth in that location. The first picture is a stock Ford head, the second is a Snyder's 5.5 head. This is not a foolproof way to identify a Snyder's head since I have seen other, older, aftermarket heads with no identifying features or casting marks. Gar Williams

May Snyder head came in today and the casting sand pattern seems a little courser then my stock head. I intend to paint this weekend and hopefully the look will smooth out a bit.

Thank you all for your comments and Gar thanks for taking the time to send the two photos. Mine is smooth so it's "likely" that it is a Snyder. I just received the engine and it was "specked" out to have a Snyder HC head. It sure has more "guts" than my old one. Thanks again.

I checked two of my older heads and they do have that small raised mark in front of the water outlet, whereas the Snyder is smooth. Also my Snyder has a perfectly round 3/8" diameter casting mark on the top drivers side a little more than half way back.

Group,

Very interesting. I have NO raised casting mark in the water pump area. I do have either a faint 18 or 19 near the front of the head toward number 1 cylinder. Also, the compression is 70 lbs here in "thin air" colorado (5000 ft).

I wonder if I have a HC Head ?
