New horn, no honk
Just baught a brand new Sparton horn from Brattons. Didn't come with instruction on connecting the wiring. The car did not have a horn proviously. I connected the yellow wire to the one black screw under the cover. Connected the blue/yellow to the copper colored frame. Horn didn't work. Reversed the wiring, still didn't work. Put the horn on the bench, connected a 6V 2amp battery charger to it, still dosent work. No spark either.

Re: New horn, no honk
One wire goes on the right side of the copper bracket, the other wire goes to the other side. It doesn't matter which side if you're using an original type loom. When you push the horn button it completes the circuit and the horn sounds. Nothing attaches to a screw. I can't explain your bench test without seeing what you actually did. though. Make sure you don't have your adjustment screw too tight, or your cover screw either.

Re: New horn, no honk
I'm no expert on these, although I just reinstalled mine. The wires connected to the copper connections on either side of the black screw. On my car the yellow wire was on the driver's side, not sure if that matters...polarity might not be an issue?

Re: New horn, no honk
Follow the instructions from 700rpm. The horn does not use the body of the horn for any electrical connection.
Like 700RPM states, the power comes from the battery to the horns brass clip through the horn to the other brass clip over to the light bail up the steering column to the switch and then to ground. Were is an edited wiring diagram to show how the wires run.

No matter what you do, I pretty sure it still won't honk.

Re: New horn, no honk
The terminals are pushed in from the ends of the clips, so they point towards each other.

Re: New horn, no honk
thanks for that niblet of info, whoever installed mine jammed the terminals into the side opening of the clips. That puts the ends of the terminals too close to making contact with the cover for a potential short. I thought something looked weird about it. Thanks Tom

Re: New horn, no honk
David,
You must hook one wire to one side of the copper terminal and the other to the other side of the copper termianl. This horn is one of those aftermarket ones. They can be problematic at times. If you will provide me with your phone number, I will call to help you or you can call me at: 601-469-0878. Email at: [email protected] Regards, Neil THE HORN MAN |

Re: New horn, no honk
My horn needs the engine to be rev'd up a bit, it sometimes doesn't really get a good "ahhooogah!" sound at idle speed. Maybe I have a poor performing horn, it's always been that way with it.

Re: New horn, no honk
Have you cleaned the commutator with fine sandpaper, and put a couple drops of oil on each wick? If that still isn't enough, try backing off the adjustment screw just one click. I recently had to back off my screw one click and now it blows perfectly.
